I'm sure a lot of you have heard this commonly asked questions in interviews "How do your friends describe you"? or "What do tour friends like/dislike about you"? I just want to ask why do interviewers ask this question and why is there an emphasis on friends? After-all, isn't an interview about yourself and achievements? What's the purpose of this question? Your thoughtful comments are appreciated :)

I'll reverse the question and ask, what is the interviewer getting out of a question like that? What does this show about you? (Actually asking your friends this question will help you answer this well)

To see what attributes you possess. They have a marking criteria for certain list of attributes. It's what I teach my interview students.

I was thinking about perspective taking and empathy, such as assessing how well you know the thoughts of your friends?

No. It's asking you how you view yourself and what your salient personal qualities are as seen by other people.

ok, so basically this is a question related to a person's self-concept and sense of self?

In a way yes but if you don't show the right attributes they will mark you down regardless. There's no need to analyze this question in great depth, keep it simple is my motto. Just think how do I portray myself to be a future doctor.

thanks, but I just want to know one more thing. For e.g. If someone says their friends like them because they're trustworthy and honest, but say they don't know what their friends don't like about them, what does it show about this person's attributes? thank you so much for your help

Says they could be immature, arrogant and perhaps don't see a need for self improvement. I assume you didn't know this and if you didn't then I suggest someone experienced to guide you in your answers. If you did, congratulations you are one step closer to medicine.

to get an idea of your personality without asking you directly how you would describe yourself.
