Can someone who is ranking second overtake the first ranking guy if he performs better in the trials and external HSC? And, if yes, can a third place student take first place if he performs better in trials and externals than the first and second ranked students?

Ranks are determined by school assessments only.

It depends on the weightings of each assessment, and the difference in marks between rank 1,2 & 3.
