more ppl viewing on mths ext 2.. Can someone pls help

a) Show that e^x = sin x + 3 has a root between x=1 and x=2.
b) Use the method of halving the interval three times to find a closer approximation to the root.

I've never worked with e's, while doing the usual sub in for a) the back of book shows diff answers.. but i have the method right.
b) Can someone please show me working out for this? text book doesn't have example for this question.. did normal halving interval method but its not coming out right.

Thankyou for whoever helps

one thread pls: http://community.boredofstudies.org/13/mathematics-extension-1/328104/polynomial-question-ah.html

a) move everything to the LHS and equate it with zero and sub in 1 and 2; you will see that the signs are different

b) straightforward

for a) i got the signs were different, but i had different answers to the back of the book... i subbed in 1 and 2, into the calc with the e and sin and everything

b) not straightforward for me >.> im getting different signs each time .. when apparently the signs are the same..

you goofed up by leaving it in degrees; change calculator to radians however you do that on your one - that will fix the magnitude issue

you haven't learnt it properly then

(1+2)/2 = 1.5

then sub that into the equation

if it is +ve, ignore the upper limit and replace with 1.5 and the converse
