There has been a flurry of activity in the last 25 minutes – here’s what we know:
Several hostages – thought to number five to seven – have fled the cafe.
Loud bangs have been heard and police confirm live ammunition has been used.
Other people have been removed from the scene, some on stretchers, apparently needing medical attention. There are unconfirmed reports that four hostages have been injured.
A bomb disposal robot has gone into the building.

Unconfirmed. 7, 9, CNN, sky news are all reporting unconfirmed stuff as 'confirmed'. ABC news hasn't said anything about deaths because it isn't 100% confirmed yet (i.e. proper journalism)

Pretty successful job done by the police. Casualties kept at a minimum. If they rushed it might not have ended as well.

Wow, I was hoping to wake up to seeimg the news of the peaceful resolution of this situation. Instead, there are reports of dead people... Were the tactical team able to break in and enter successfully?

3:55am: SMH crime reporter Emma Partridge has been outside the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital at Camperdown.
She reports: One woman, believed to be a hostage was seen being wheeled into RPA on a stretcher just after 3.30am.
Four ambulances were parked in the emergency department bays.
4:22am: A number of hostages are still being treated at Martin Place while the most seriously injured have been taken to hospital, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.
"We are treating a number of patients and it is still very active in the city at the moment," the spokeswoman said.
"We are treating and transporting patients to inner city hospitals as required," she said.
There are more than 14 specialist and general paramedic crews in the CBD.

Trains and buses into Sydney's CBD continue to operate, with some changes.
All train lines and stations are operating as normal, other than trains on the T4 Eastern Suburbs Line, which are not stopping at Martin Place.
All bus services are operating along normal corridors with the following exceptions:
City-bound express bus services that operate via the Eastern Distributor will use the Eastern Distributor, William Street, College Street, St James Road and Elizabeth Street to Liverpool Street.
Route 200 bus services will operate to North Sydney via Park Street, Druitt Street, Clarence Street and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Route 200 bus services will operate to Bondi Junction via the Sydney Harbour Bridge, York Street, Druitt Street and Park Street.
CDC/Hillsbus route 620, 650 and 642 bus services that operate via the Cahill Expressway will use Grosvenor Street, George Street and Market Street.
Ferry and light rail services are operating as normal.

What specifically motivated the gunman. We do know he had been fighting a long and unsuccessful battle over his conviction for sending offensive letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers between 2007 and 2009.

'It's been very difficult'
A man has thanked emergency services after learning his loved one had survived the Martin Place siege, reports Emma Partridge.
"I think all the emergency services have done a really good job and been really supportive," he said.
"It's been very distressing for everybody. It's been very difficult."
The man was one of at least a dozen family members seen leaving a court house at St James to be reunited with relatives just after 5am.

Commissioner Scipione said highly trained police made the decision to enter the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in the early hours of Tuesday morning to save lives after they heard gunshots ring out inside the cafe.
"They made the call because they believed that at that time, that if they didn't enter, there would have been many more lives lost," he said.
"I think events that were unfolding inside the premises led them to the belief that now was the time to actually deploy, and they did.
"At this stage I understand there was a number of gunshots that were heard, which caused officers to move straight to a what we call an EA, an emergency action plan, and that caused them to enter."

17 hostages were held inside the cafe
NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione confirmed that 17 hostages were held inside the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Martin Place.
Two of those hostages were killed. They are a man, aged 34, and a woman, aged 38.
The "lone gunman" was shot dead, Mr Scipione said. He has been identified as Man Haron Monis.
Six of the hostages escaped uninjured.
A male police officer was shot in the face, but is expected to recover. The injured hostages were taken to hospital with a range of injuries.

NSW Premier Mike Baird was speaking with "the heaviest of hearts" on Tuesday morning, he said.
"Unbelievably overnight we have lost some of our own in an attack we never thought we would see here in our city," Mr Baird said.
"In the past 24 hours this city has been shaken by a tragedy that none of us could have ever imagined.
"Today we must come together as never before. We are stronger together. We will get through this. We will get through this.
"The events that we have seen have shaken us, but they do not dampen our resolve."

Fairfax Media can confirm that three people are dead following the siege in Sydney's Martin Place.
The gunman, Man Haron Monis, was pronouced dead after being taken to hospital, reports Nick Ralston.
Another man, aged 34, and a woman, aged 38, were pronounced dead also after being taken to hospital.
A total of four injured people have been taken to hospital, while another person was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Those taken to hospital are:
Two women with non life-threatening injuries.
Another woman was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to her shoulder,
A male police officer , who suffered a non life-threatening wound to his face from gunshot pellets.
And a 35-year-old woman was taken to hospital as a precaution.
