Hi I'm looking for courses that will help me eventually work in game programming. I've looked at software engineering, computer sciences and several other similar ones but I am completely unsure what course to select and what Uni to go to! Please help. BTW atar requirements shouldn't be a problem so suggest any, thanks!

UTS's ''Bachelor of Science in Games Development'' looks like a possible option.

(That being said, I don't know much about the state of the gaming industry in AUSTRALIA - I think most people will tell you to do a computer science degree at UNSW/USYD or IT at UTS for ''safety'' instead of a games development degree)

If you want to work in the "core" of the game e.g. engine programming, then software engineering is the way to go.

Macquarie also offer a games dev degree, but I would be careful of those. They (at least the UTS one) are essentially just IT degrees with a forced major. The games dev industry in Australia is not very big, so a specialised course might not be the best idea.

If you think your ATAR is going to be competitive I would definitely look into the BIT course at UTS, there are some students in there keen on doing software development and plenty of sponsors offering dev internships. Finishing a course in three years with a year of work experience and close to a guaranteed job is hard to complain about lol.

You just won't get the theoretical grounding that you'd get in a course like comp sci at UNSW which have the most reputable comp sci and engineering faculty/courses in the state.

As brent said, game dev in Australia is very small and hard to get in to. If you're completely committed to it of course you can make something out of it, and maybe something like the AIE (Academy of Interactive Entertainment) might be more suitable.

That being said, if you're looking for a safety net then it'd be best not to specialise at this stage and instead do Software Engineering or Computer Science as suggested (and maybe major in something like AI?).

Game devs in aus keep going bankrupt coz we can't compete against overseas devs.

Russians and eastern euros are doing pretty well now.

Last big company was the dudes that did LA noire. Team Bondi or some shit and Rockstar almost had a "Rockstar Sydney" division until bondi fucked up and went bankrupt.
