Just wondering, is it a good idea to do volunteering work during HSC Year?

The first term holidays are already over and I was hoping to get some volunteer work done before Term 3 when my trials kick in. However, having asian parents, they keep repeating the fact that I won't get enough time to concentrate on school if I become a volunteer....

The volunteering work I'm looking at would take two afternoons each week for around an hour at a palliative care centre and although I applied in Year 11 the times given to me clashed with my after school classes :frown2:

Discuss, comment, give me an idea of the times you think may be suitable....currently I'm thinking (hoping) to start halfway through Term 2 and into the Term 2 holidays.
If you've had experience with volunteer work, I would really appreciate your personal insight on things ^_^

it's still a good time, i would avoid doing it while exams are close, i.e. around 3 weeks before exams at least

2 hour per week commitments sounds doable-my daily uni commute is already that amount of time-so unless you spend an exorbitant amount of time travelling to your school or have a whole load of other extra-curricular commitments, I think it is a great idea to volunteer-because it helps you to keep things in perspective, and you know what they all say-it is all about studying smart, not just studying 24/7. However, I would not volunteer if the only times available is those that clash with your classes-study should be a priority at this stage

Yes, I'm definitely going to stop start of Term 3 so that'll be around 5-6 weeks before my trials :D

I live close by to school so it's not too bad and the place I'm looking to volunteer at is walking distance from home, that's why I feel like it's a perfect opportunity that I missed out on last year in Year 11 because of timetable clashes :( Since my timetable has shifted for Year 12 and I have afternoons free I rather put it to good use than to be constantly pressured into studying endlessly or procrastinating at home haha.

Volunteering/is a great idea whilst doing your HSC. As long as it does not take up all of your time. If it's only for a couple of hours then it's okay.

In my HSC I did a couple of days work experience in the July holidays in community services as I wasn't 100% sure what I wanted to do. It was great and a nice break from study.

Now, at this same place I have been offered a part time job doing the administration side of things. It's great because it works around my uni schedule and is in an industry I'd love to work in once I finish my degree.

I must say if I hadn't of given up that little bit of my time I wouldn't of got the job I just gotten.
