The scenario was actually different to what I think you are imagining. We had two people rank equal first internally, so they received for their moderated school assessment mark the average of the two highest examination marks (99 and 97) - i.e. 98. I was ranked 7th internally and was given 94 (four marks less than the moderated school assessment rank for rank one) as my moderated school assessment mark, and it was my examination mark of 99, which helped me get SR, which was 97 or above that year. So tbh my moderated school assessment mark gave me very little chance of SRing - it needed a very strong performance in the HSC final examination to make up for it.
So you state ranked with an HSC mark of 96.5 ?? Which subject was this?

Economics in 2014. It was an unusual year that year.
You mean 2013 :p

I'm curious as to what those 2 people who came equal first got as their exam marks. Did one of them flunk out or something because there should've been 3 SR'ers from ur school. (i.e. did one of them get like 94 or less?)

OMG yeah, got my years mixed up, oops. Original post has been fixed haha.

One of the 2 equal firsts also state ranked, and the other equal first got 94 iirc as their exam mark, giving them 96 overall, and hence just missing out.

lol really?

What was your school rank? and how much did your internals get moderated by ?
Low 280s in 2013, and I'm not quite sure about the moderation. My raw internal (prior to moderation) was 90, and my external was 99. At the end, it was 99/99.

it can depend on the subject.
for example in my year, the top two people in Engineering state ranked.

then again it also depends on how close 2nd is to 1st in both internals and externals.

so 3-4 % behind 1st place is not a big deal?
Depends on the subject. In Ext 1/2 maths it is definitely a big deal.
But surely the HSC is about getting into the course you want, not whether you get 5 minutes of fame for getting a state rank in one subject?

ehhh not about the 5 minutes of fame, just want a nice goal to accomplish.

Definitely, I know two people, one that was ranked ~12th internally at Ruse and one that was like 4th in internals that got a state rank
