So im ranked 3rd in my cohort. Both 1st and 2nd are solid, and so the prediction was that us three would get the top marks (possible 90's a piece) and thus our internal marks would be 90's as we wouldn't have to rely on the rest of the cohort.
However, 1st had a nightmare, stuffed up paper 1, and didn't even show up to paper 2. Assuming he doesn't have a legit excuse for being away, he's probs gonna get a shit mark.
That means he's probs gonna take either 2nd places or my mark. 2nd place is fine since he'll take the remaining, but then my mark will rely on 4th or 5th. Since 4th and 5th aren't exactly the best (there is a big margin between top 3 and the rest), its probs gonna stuff up my internal and hence my final.
My question: will BOSTES account for this and still give me a decent mark based on my performance in the external and my internal marks (I got 88 overall internally) or are they just gonna fck it and give me the third highest aka a low 80's (it may sound condescending, but our whole cohort got thrown off by the prescribed in mod b, so most of them predict low 80's)

Thanks

well if 1st legit didnt turn up yesterday - he get's zero for that paper - might even get a non attempt and fail too lol. im under the impression that bostes will fuck his mark off as it's too depressed to be included in moderation. therefore you are fine.

checking through my emails and i actually asked bostes this exact question haha. here's what they said:

"Student Support has been forwarded your email. I write to respond to your
queries.

There are processes in place, during moderation, to address students who
underperform in their examination and their result is deemed to be a
depressed score. In this case, their examination mark would be removed from
the moderation process.

I trust this addresses your concerns

Yours sincerely
Neal Crocker

Its only the very top score and very bottom score that matters pretty much. If you alone got 90+, or anyone did, then you are sweet.

The way it works is that your 'internal mark' is some portion of the total marks achieved externally, determined by rank*. However, if a student underperforms externally, they are (along with their mark) excluded from this pool of total marks. Additionally, your external mark isn't affected in any way by other people. So you have nothing to worry about :)

* not really, it's determined by the submitted internal mark you're given, however rank is preserved.

Yep cool. My next question is: what mark does someone have to get to be excluded from the pool? Is it like <50?

It's a lot more complex than that --- very exceptional cases would be determined on a case by case basis by the Board. However, if the mark is the lowest mark in the cohort, then it undergoes an automatic check.

An estimated lowest Mark is generated automatically (I can give you the formula if you want), using the second lowest mark and the standard deviation of both internal and external marks. If the difference between the actual lowest mark and the estimated lowest mark is greater than 15 (7.5 marks per unit) then the mark is excluded.

hmmm, interesting.
Well we'll just have to see because i'm pree sure 1st place doesn't have a legit excuse for being away.

Perhaps. But it's pretty easy for one to get a doctor cert, for pretty much anything nowadays. Well, I'm sure BOSTEs try to clamp down on it as much as they can, they can't exactly prove it (like you could) so very good chance he'll get an average mark or something.

But i thought you have to have a really good reason for bostes to even consider i.e. your vomiting and have explosive diarrhea simultaneously and can't leave the house lol.
Plus he was completely normal during paper 1

Update: So it turned out 1st was genuinely ill and has a doctors report and will hand in a illness/misadventure form.
What's the protocol now? Like do they give him an estimated mark or does he still take the highest?

Also, what are the chances of him get his form upheld, considering he was only ill and it wasn't an accident, family tragedy etc.

I can't answer the second part as I don't have any experience with that. As for the first part:

"Students with an upheld illness/misadventure appeal are then awarded their moderated assessment mark also as their examination mark if the latter mark is lower."

But doesn't that only consider if the student actually performs the exam. So they'll compare their exam and assessment and then just give the highest as the exam.
But what about if they didn't attend? Then they don't have an external altogether (Well i mean, he still has paper 1, but i meant like a complete exam mark)

Then they'd get the moderated internal, afaik

Last question, will this moderated internal be added to the pool of marks? Or will I end up getting the 2nd highest mark instead of the first?
You're coming 3rd, so you'll have the third highest mark internally.

If you came first externally, you'd both have the same external mark.

So his moderated internal from his appeal DOES get added to the pool of marks?
