What laptop would you recommend I purchase? I'm completing Bachelor of Arts at UNSW and thinking of buying the 2016 MacBook Pro

Yes, it's really good. The touch bar certainly makes a lot of features easier to use (Idk if you're bachelor of arts with music but I know garage band has a lot of touch bar features. In general, apple has great quality anyway so I'd recommend all of them except for an air. Just not sure if you know, but the new MacBook Pro has no USB ports, to my knowledge, it comes with an adaptor.

If you're set on getting a macbook, don't get the 2016. You want a convenient laptop that doesn't require you to bring anything else, i.e dongles. The 2016 laptop has no usb ports (only thunderbolt), and it is slightly faster performance-wise than the 2015, that's not to say that the 2015 performance is bad. If you're looking for laptops other than macbooks, maybe look for a zenbook, or a dell xps.

Definitely a Mac, I don't think it matters which type really but it has to have USB ports!

If you are doing music or media based subjects you could get a pro, but if you are just doing more writing based subjects an Air would be fine!

Don't get a Mac. Get a Lenovo, they're about $1000 cheaper but has all the same functionality.

I have a thinkpad t460s. Build imo is on par if not better than a mac (it's a enterprise model) and performance is better.

Cost me $900 or so new.

If you don't need the Mac OS definitely a great option.

What's so important about USB ports? Can't I just use google drive. Also my subjects are all writing based

Transferring large files or many files.

You might not always have access to internet.

Backup storage.

Using a mouse.

Using a dongle.

Using a portable CD drive.

Attaching a printer.

Redundancy, in case one doesn't work.

I only know UNSW students get greater discounts on Apple laptops than USYD students (like ~$100 cheaper ) lol

My $450 2-1 laptop (i5 5th gen) has been working great for everything I've ever needed it for (including more intensive stuff like programming/running LAMP stacks etc)

I dont really see any extra functionality tho , but if you have the $$$ go for dem sweet aesthetics

IMO the Mac has better build quality than a T460s. The machined aluminium feels much sturdier. That being said, I am a fan of Thinkpads, but I recently swapped my T460 for a Yoga 260 for work.

Back on topic, I have to admit in the current state without the normal USB ports, it's difficult to recommend Macbooks unless you really can live without them. And even then, I'd have to recommend a Pro so you have at least more than one! I think the Air was a great laptop, and am even thinking of buying another one for my Dad since he doesn't care for Retina but would need USB-A ports.
