So we have to write a creative about Identity. We did a practice, and basically I wrote about a poor migrant trying to get a job, with lots of techniques and a metaphor of water running throughout. I actually thought it was probably the best piece of writing I've done. Creative writing is generally my strong point in English: I got 85% in it last year.

Anyway, so I handed it in to my teacher and he gave it back to me on Friday. I received nothing but criticism on pretty much EVERYTHING. All the metaphors I had written were apparently "too cliched", "too overpowering/overwritten" or "too overused", even when I had come up with the metaphors all by myself and was proud of them. Other parts of my writing were "irrelevant", "not creative enough", "too literal" and "not authentic enough". Also, I spent AGES trying to come up with a name from the particular culture of a person I was writing about (Polish) , searching through all the name and surname websites etc, and he said "Try to use a more original name"!!! Well no, I used a name as original as I could get, in fact, I made the surname up, but just used the Polish -ski ending!!

Also the BIGGEST JOKE of it was, he told me to avoid FLASHBACKS, but he told us that that was what we were SUPPOSED to do when we were given the task!!

I don't know whether he is being serious about this or not. He's either being too over-critical or biased, since I did well last year. I say biased because I don't think he likes me because he can't spell and I correct him in class, hahaha.

So the question is, how the hell am I supposed to write something GOOD for my assignment, without him criticising every little thing???

Edit: Oh and also, he didn't even SEEM to pick up on the other techniques that I had used!!!!

why dont you hand your story into another English teacher at school?
its what I do because I hate my advanced English teacher, I dropped out of extension 1 English because the teacher was horrible.
just hand it in to another English teacher and see how you go. He's probably trying to push you to get the best out of you if you got a great mark last year.
don't forget that teachers expect a lot more out of the senior students and they can disregard your junior marks.
don't be discouraged. prove him wrong.

Good point. Unfortunately we have to hand it in to our class teacher, and everything is marked by our class teacher.

so there's no way you could pass a second copy onto another teacher? if you get into trouble just make an excuse like you wanted more opinions, just hand it in as a draft.- teachers love that.

in my class there's 28 kids and its so hard to get decent feedback and there's obvious favourites.
just keep working at it I'm sure you'll end up nailing it.

The reality is teachers don't have a lot of time to read through the creatives, so it is understandable if techniques are missed and what not. I definitely know how you feel though, having helped one of my students through a good 6 drafts of a creative yet every draft their teacher had something different to criticise (that they said was great in a previous draft) and it was a nightmare. Unfortunately the HSC system is not necessarily conducive to 'original' creatives and you have to try your best to tailor it to your teacher's liking if they are the only marker (but just be aware to not make it extremely tailored in the actual HSC because other markers will be marking it)-you can also go on yourtutor-I think certain libraries and schools subscribed to the service, and if you have a relevant library card number or in one of these schools, you can log in to the website from like 3-9/10pm I think weekdays and get some other feedback for your work. Don't give up and try your best :) Also don't take it too personally
