Hi ya’ll,

I’m looking at applying to university in 2020 with the long term ambition to become a clinical psychologist. I’ll be applying as mature aged with a cert IV Mental health and a diploma in Community Services (about to finish the Diploma in Jan). My TAFE teacher has advised me because of the Diploma I’m possibly eligible for 1-1.5 years off a Bachelor in Social Work (depending on the University), but Social Work isnt the direction I want to go.

SO, in dumbie talk (I left school when I was 14 so I didn’t get to learn all the fun stuff about how university works), how would I proceed in becoming a psychologist if I was to take the pathway of doing an undergrad in Social Work? I’ve been told if you do a bachelor in Social Work/Social Welfare you can then go do a honors in Psychology and then a Masters in Clinical Psych? But I dont know if this is truth or what pathway I need to take.

Thanks in advance

I'm not entirely sure of how it works but you should contact UAC and ask them specifically

Transferring from TAFE to uni is possible and you'll have to apply via UAC as well as the uni directly. They will use your TAFE marks as an "entry point" to studying psychology at whatever tertiary institution you are aiming to study

not really sure about social work.. ive heard you can through bachelor of science or arts that has a main psych program and is accredited.

Masters in Clinical Psych?
you'll need a 4 year psych degree (APAC accredited), I dont think bachelors in social work with just a psych hons would fulfill its requirements. Even with 4 year psych accredited degree, still heaps competitive, need an interview, letters of recommendation for admission.

Alternatively you can do a graduate diploma in psych (deemed equivalent to 3 year psych degree - so you can do this after bachelor of social work) and then go on to psych honours and then 2 years psych approved internship then be a registered psychologist. - Would recommend this way for you
Good luck. :)

Just so I know I’m understanding correctly, Bach in Social Work ➡ Graduate Dip in Psych ➡ Psych Honours ➡ internship?
In that order? [emoji4]

Ye, can either do the psych board approved 2 year internship or the masters of clinical psych, one or the other - whichever works out for u. Just remember its not as easy as you may think and would be competitive to gain admission in grad programs for psych.
