When I did year 11 I don't think I did anything in the holidays before but it depends on your current math ability. I wasn't having trouble with the year 10 concepts at the time so I didn't feel like I needed to learn ahead straight away.
okay. Just wondering in Uni why is advanced math a prerequisite for a lot of subjects?

Because general mathematics is not sufficient for uni courses like engineering or science. You don't learn calculus in general maths and that underpins all of engineering and science. At uni the first maths course you do already assumes you know how to do calculus. At UNSW its actually recommended for engineering and science you have done 3 unit maths as well. For economics stuff you can get away with advanced maths but general probably not

so if you do a science subject, the prerequisite is advanced math but do they also teach you higher math along with science

Yeah they do but it's at a much faster pace than what Ext 1 or 2 math is taught in high school. First year math in uni pretty much starts at the Ext 2 level so people who did just 2u maths tend to struggle.

The maths subjects you do as a science or engineering student is the same for the first two courses. Usually for science courses only 2 maths first year courses are required. But it depends on the science. Something like Biology you are not going to do many maths courses but physics or chemistry you will have to do maths courses

The science is very different from high school. Where in high school you are told to just ignore the hard maths behind something or just assume some equation exists, at uni if you are studying a science course, the whole point is so you actually understand it properly. So you are expected to know it because that is the only way you can truly understand subjects like chemistry which has a lot of quantum mechanics. That has maths involved as you can't just describe something like that in words because derivations of formulas are necessary to understand because it teaches you the science of why certain things are done

Hello, did you study ahead for any of your subjects in the upcoming 6 week break when you were in Yr 10 transitioning to Yr 11, and if you did then how much every day?

I don't remember exactly but I am pretty sure I didn't do that much because I ended up going overseas for like 3 weeks. I think I may have done a little bit for physics and maths (but this was cause I was doing accelerated maths so I was already doing 2 unit). So overall not that much but that was because I was already performing well and not having any troubles. It's a different case if you need more time to learn things then you can benefit from holiday pre study

I failed a task in the HSC(Specifically Standard English and got like 45%) which scales MUCH worse than maths and my atar was still in the high 90s. So 58% for a low weighted task? Not as bad as you may think...
how were you able to come past that result and do better in your second internal exam?

Don't stress, I did pretty bad in my Y12 Chem half-yearly (I got 19/38, so just scraped a 50% after appealing), but I still managed to get a high B5 in the end. Don't let one exam hurt your confidence, doing bad in one exam really doesn't affect you as much as you think, just learn from your mistakes and prepare in a better way (speaking to your teachers will help). Good luck!

It was actually my 2nd or 3rd task.

The reason I got such a low mark is because I mistook when the exam finished which I have a habit of doing for some reason. So I was only able to finish like half my essay which was obviously stressful. I just kept doing what I did in previous tasks that got me good marks and it just went back to normal in my next few tasks.

so is it possible to pick up your rank and marks after 1 exam that goes like that or does it affect the rest of your internal ranks for English?

For sure it affected the my final internal mark but I still did better than I thought at a mid band 5 which is what my goal was because I’m terrible at English. I was actually ranked 2nd so I dropped a few ranks. Can’t really recover the same rank because you gotta rely on the people above you doing really bad or you beating them by a large margin which at the higher marks obviously isn’t possible. You can make some pretty good rank gains though!

I did make some pretty good rank gains in Extension Maths though. I was sick in my first internal exam and I thought I could easily smash it but it came back to bite me because I ended up with a crap mark in the 70s and a rank in the low 30s. However at the end of the year I was able to bring that rank up to the top 5. However I must say this is only because I literally topped every exam after that. If I had failed like English though it would’ve been a whole different story, I probably wouldn’t have been able to get my rank that high.
