Hey.

If anyone knows me from my other threads, especially "am i too dumb for chemistry" i assume that you know my condition with chemistry and how much i absolutely suck at it. right now i am learning it but VERY VERY BEHIND IN CLASS and do not understand a thing. i feel very bad about this and very panicked because HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET A GOOD MARK OR REACH THE "STANDARD/ASSUMED" level?!?!?!

was anyone else like this before becoming good at chemistry?

TO THOSE WHO REPLIED TO THAT CHEMISTRY THREAD AND SAID THEY WERE IN THE SAME POSITION AS ME:
how did you improve? what level exactly were you at? did tutor help?

Hey I'm kinda in the same boat as you, however, I had this weird epiphany and have convinced myself (for now) that if I work hard enough it will be all good. Particularly because everyone in my class is amazing at Chem, I've decided to just focus on learning the syllabus and to not worry about where other people are. After all, anyone can improve at a subject if they put the work in

Ok ok calm down. There is still time. How do you improve at anything? Well, first you need to understand the material. Whether through external websites (such as Khan Academy), or through tuition, it is essential you understand content to do well.

I'm also doing chemistry and I'm not finding it too bad. Can I PM you with more details?

bruh...i literally dont know how to study or keep up with the content learning in class (right now its radioactive isotopes i think..) because i dont know the foundations of it. i dont even know how to look at atomic number or mass and calculate neutrons and protons

Dude, you have the power to improve. You literally have it. You know what you don't know and don't get, so make a checklist. i.e How to look for atomic mass. Learn about it via video (YouTube) or textbook or ask your teacher or your friends. Just focus on the understanding the little things, then the big things will make sense. Maybe follow up each checkpoint with questions.

If you are not understanding in class you can do a few things like watch YouTube videos on the concept. For chemistry there is literally thousands of videos on each and every topic. Although they might not be from Australia, many things in the syllabus across different countries are the same. So try that out. If that still doesn’t fix issues then you might want to consider investing in tutoring if you don’t already have it. Or if you do have it make use of that tutor more. Ask them questions in the lesson, message them outside the lesson if they offer that. First step to getting better at the subject is not be afraid of it and just ask for help from people you know like friends, tutor or teacher

It looks like you are unable to "get it" by yourself. So you will need someone to help you, if you can be helped at all. Going to a Chemistry coaching centre isn't the place for you. You will need someone, like jazz519, to give you personalised help. Getting a "right person" to help you is very important. You have not indicated whether or not you already have got the help of a tutor.

Recently I went over a few initial chapters of a high school (IB) chemistry text, when I was thinking of giving you some preliminary help during the holidays. I can see why it can be challenging, esp if you don't have the required background knowledge. If you can afford it, engage a 1-on-1 tutor. Else you will need to depend on the goodwill of friends or your teacher. Don't leave it too long; you will only get further and further behind, and more and more desperate.

Personally I found a friend that understood the topic very well and got them to explain it. But generally just try to find someone who can explain it to you in a way that you can understand and absorb the information. Also I would suggest rereading a yr 10 textbook to reaffirm or build foundations thus when tackling these type of questions you have some sort of basic understanding, which also allows you to better understand the harder topics.

I reaalllly struggled with science too for ages, but I realised it's because I didn't put work in because I knew I sucked at it and then I just got more behind and it became a vicious cycle.

First thing I think you should do is look at the syllabus - everything you'll need for exams is from the syllabus. All exam questions will be pulled from there.
Not only that though, it'll give you more context to what exactly you're learning. I found that not knowing what to expect in the next class was definitely not helping my ability to absorb the content during class time. However, once I started studying alongside the syllabus, not only was I more prepared for what I was going to be learning, but I also knew when a certain point was going to be important and possible tested on.

Tutoring did help heaps for me but that's because I was given excellent resources (my college is famous for their super solid textbooks/workbooks). I would suggest for you to go and find a textbook that explains concepts in a way that you find easy to read and to understand. Like jazz said, there are so many Youtube videos that give you crash courses on chem.

It's going to be hard work and it'll take time! But you've got this!

Yes chemistry isnt too hard, you just have to soak in all the knowledge and show enthusiasm. I learnt that if you are not enthusiastic then you are screwed. I managed to finish the whole prelim chemistry in term 1 so it gives me enough time to do past papers for prelim. Just believe in your self and show enthusiasm

bruh.. "chemistry isnt too hard" ????? and it is one of the highest scaling and considered to be one of the hardest subjects you can choose.

I'm struggling too. Especially because of moles falling during the time of online learning. Apparently it's a really important topic for y11 and y12. Gotta learn this entirely new concept myself
Also i keep comparing myself to people in my class who seem to be cruising through everything and already know it all. But now i'm trying to stop this unhealthy comparison, and remind myself that this is about achieving my personal best (yes it sounds cringe ik)

really?? you must have a lot of foundational knowledge then. it takes me a while to learn it because i need to focus on other subjects as well. if you don't mind helping me with chem sometime can you send me ur discord?

Ohhh, let me emphasis how important moles are. They are super useful in year 12 make sure you make your understanding to the moles concept elite. I could help you if you want to understand what moles are. Send me your discord if you can.

That's pretty good, It's better to learn from your mistakes so when the exam time comes you know what you are doing

i've been using an online course called lesrn hsc - they only have a hsc chem course on there at the moment but its super good. my sister knows one of the co-founders and they were really really smart in high school and also tutored heaps after they graduated. took me about 7ish hrs to finish organic chem. the website is lesrn.com.au - hope this helps!

I googled lesrn hsc and i couldn't find a website with the link lesrn.com.au. The first thing that came up was Hsc study lab. is that what you mean?
