Whats up everyone. So I just finished my prelim exams, and I felt as though I didn't do that great in them due to minimal study and my arbitrary laziness. My goal is to get a 90 ATAR. I am wondering as to how I will prepare the transition from year 11 to year 12 and to make a comeback in my marks and not repeat the same mistakes I made this year. I would appreciate if you guys could provide some advice on how to prepare for year 12, and how to study throughout the year (writing notes, preparing for exams etc). Thanks.

firstly reflect on what you did in year 11 and the prelim exams and what worked/ didnt work. Secondly i cant emphasise this enough, take a break. My biggest mistake after prelim was burning myself out during the first term of year 12. Take a break even if it is a week then kick start year 12. Do things in year 12 as they come, consistently. Make study notes every week, do practice question every week. DONT CRAM, cramming doesnt work and brings about a lot of stress

A good start would involve having a look at the syllabus document for the HSC course of your respective subjects. If I remember correctly, your subjects include English Advanced, Business Studies and Economics. Going through each of those subjects' syllabus document will result in a variety of benefits:
  • English Advanced: You will be able to familiarise yourself with the main themes/ideas/issues raised within each module in advance.
  • Business Studies: You will be able to understand the course structure as well as gain a general idea of the HSC topics.
  • Economics: You will be able to gain a general idea of the HSC topics, some of which will expand on Preliminary concepts/topics.
Also, for English Advanced, in addition to the syllabus document, you should familiarise yourself with your prescribed texts (if known) as this can make analysing them a less demanding experience since you would have gained a good idea of what each of your prescribed texts covers (in terms of themes/ideas/issues raised by the respective modules) in advance. This will also allow you to develop and improve your ability to incorporate those different texts in your responses early on.

As mentioned above, you should be making study notes as you go (i.e. on a regular basis). It is also important to do so in a timely manner, so that you are able to manage your time effectively. Also, the type of notes you will make, such as handwritten vs typed/digital, is something to consider and is important to decide early on so that you don't face problems with respect to making notes later on.

I hope this helps! :D

Is Business Studies really THAT dry in Year 12?
I'm already planning to drop it in Yr 12 because honestly... I tried to sit down and study for it, just didn't work out lol.

Also, if you were to choose, would you drop Chemistry or Business Studies? (Taking into account scaling, cohort, interest, etc.) but not for future decisions (Uni), just the subject itself.

If you can't sit down and study the subject, I would drop it. Even if the HSC is more interesting than the prelim course content, I doubt its going to be significantly different to make a noticeable difference for you to start enjoying it. Business Studies will still have essay responses, long answers, short answers and the standard format for the HSC and its going to be naturally harder, can only assume the same with chem.

True true! Additionally, it felt like Business Studies was trying to "catch up" with Economics content lol. Every few classes, our business teacher is like, "Have you guys heard of economies of scale for business operations? *class* ... "Alright, for the people who don't do economics...".

The subjects I did for my prelim were;

Maths Ext 1, Adv
Eng Adv
Physics
Economics
Business Studies
IPT

Planning to drop Business Studies and IPT. I'm unsure of IPT since its really easy for me but my cohorts not near my level of commitment or work ethic so its a futile endeavour considering group projects are main components. I'm just not enjoying business studies anymore so I'm dropping that as well.

I'm just planning to commit to mx2 + phys + eco combo for HSC

Honestly felt like a genius in my business class when they were talking about economic effects, no one knew the economic terms I was using since I was the only one studying economics in that class lmao

Damn, very nice. Going against the norm in a unique way, quite relatable subjects if I were to take 4U. Too bad its that subject where I need to dedicate too much time into it, for scaling to be on my side. Also, I came to the conclusion of buying Chemistry and Physics Strive Textbooks instead of ATAR__Notes topic tests! Thanks for your dedication and helpful advice.

Also, maybe don't drop IPT as soon as HSC begins in-case people randomly start trying in IPT. (and mainly because dropping 4 units instantaneously is like the hardest thing to do when convincing teachers, parents and year advisors lol. Our year advisor isn't letting anyone drop their subjects until 5 weeks into HSC).
Definitely drop business at the start of the year if you taking 4U though.
