The mark you get in the HSC exam is yours. That will be your external mark, there's no link to ranks with this. You can be ranked 20 and get the top mark if you get it in the actual exam. However, this won't be the same as your internal mark, which is where the ranks will be factored into it. raw doesnt matter its just purely ranks, so you can be first internally with 20% but get 95 externally and get an overall 95 hsc mark.

internal ranks matter. say for the example above you're not first with 20% but last and in the HSC you get 95%. Your external mark would be 95% but your internal since your last will reflect the lowest score in the HSC

Doesn’t the internal and external get added together and divided by two to get your final HSC mark for each respective subject? So getting 20 internally and 95 externally in this example would ultimately screw you over in comparison to valuing internal equally to hsc exams? That’s what a teacher told us, but could be wrong?

no because in that example you were first internally so your internal mark was moderated to the first external mark

ye so basically Raw external marks, Aligned, Internal marks moderated against aligned external marks, HSC mark. Scaling is done only in the calculation of your ATAR

then if you're third internally, your internal marks will be in respect to that of the 3rd ranked mark in the hsc for your school

I get if you're ranked internally lower than 1st, you're mark would be lower internally and if you get a greater external mark, you'd have that external mark. I'm inquiring whether you would be scaled down to a mark lesser than 1st regardless if you got a greater external?

yes they will receive the lower mark but only for INTERNALS

externals is a wild card

Only your internal marks are subject to moderation. Your external marks are what you get on the day

your internal would be lower, overall that depends on how you both do externally

nup, it's aligned with respect to ranks only. the fairness is questionable certainly
