Hello, my senior subject selections are coming up and I need help deciding between two subjects. (For reference I live in Queensland, Australia, and I go to a catholic school so I have to take religion [it’s compulsory], and going to another school isn’t an option for me). I want to be an aeronautical engineer, as I’m interested in aviation, engineering, and design - however, I’m considering doing electrical engineering in university and then doing aeronautical if that’s important.

So far I have 5 of my 6 atar subjects chosen, which goes as following (with my current grades);
English literature (A)
Math methods (B)
Physics (A)
Chemistry (A)
Religion and ethics (A)

As for my 6th subject, I’m stuck between doing math specialists or design technologies (DET).
I’ve been recommended (and it’s strongly encouraged) to do maths specialists but I’m only at a B/B+ standard which makes me hesitant as I’d hate for it to mess up my atar. However, in DET I’m at an A/A+ standard and I really love the subject, but I’m afraid it won’t be helpful in long term and I don’t think it scales well…

I’d love some advice and thoughts on what I should do. Thanks for your time and consideration.

I would say choose subjects that your good at ,as scaling wont matter too much if you ace those subjects (DET)

I have done both math specialist(or extension 1 maths as they call it in NSW) and D&T. I won't persuade on what to pick but here are my 'insights'.

Maths Specialist is nearly in most of all engineering degrees as a prerequisite(but there are pathways to get there with just math methods). The subject itself goes at a fast pace and you really need good time management skills with both math methods and specialists when coming to study both of them. If you believe you are able to take on another higher maths level and challenge yourself then go for it! Might drop I don't personally think

Design and Tech, which i chose because i got kicked out of french beginner :'( , has mainly minor design projects and questions about the factors that effect designs. For HSC they have Major design projects which will give you like 2-3 terms to do or sumn, but you should just ask any of your teachers to clarify that. But my pet peeve abt it is just analysing products and gadgets through the factors of design.

But with your 5 subjects, it would equal to 10 units, so you are able to attempt both specialist maths(1 unit) and d&t(2 unit) = 13 units and if you don't like specialist maths, then you can drop it, leaving D&T with it too!(unless it is different in QLD this is all nsw stuff)

Hopefully, this helps!
