My teacher said that we aren't allowed to use implicit differentiation in 3u but in 4u we can use it.
I was just wondering why bc we aren't directly taught it under the 4u syllabus either?
And also are there other technique like this that we are allowed to use for 4u but not 3u?

Ur allowed to use out of syllabus techniques in the hsc i think as long as you don't make any mistakes. However for internals, you'd have to do as your teacher says if you don't want to lose marks. That being said, imo implicit diff is simply an application of the chain rule so I don't agree that you shouldn't be able to use it in 3u.

Any OOS techniques are equally applicable to all levels of math.

Perhaps your NGO teacher is mistakenly thinking of old syllabus 4u. Old syllabus 4u explicitly included implicit differentiation. New syllabus does not.

NESA's take on this is;

Although the term ‘implicit differentiation’ doesn't appear in the syllabus, it is an application of the chain rule which is part of the Mathematics Advanced syllabus content. Implicit differentiation is a skill that would be useful for Mathematics Extension 1 students studying differential equations.

it should be though, unless my memory serves me wrong my teacher taught my class implicit differentiation while we were doing 2u+3u integration ...
one topic of contention at my school was the use of integration by parts in the 3u exam, where one of the questions involved an area qn with inverse sin and cos. i didn't use by parts because i didn't think it was allowed, but apparently it is and a few of the 4u kids used by parts to get the answer (a bit weird though because i thought the standard 3u way was a lot faster in this case ngl). in regards to internals it probably depends more on your school, so you'd have to ask your teacher in regards to what techniques you can and can't use in regards to the appropriate course
