Hi!!
I'm having another subject crisis. I'm not too sure if I should choose Korean continuers, software engineering or enterprise computing. I'm planning on dropping this unit for Year 12 anyways. For my current Y10 electives, I do not study a language but I am keen on learning Korean. I am also keen on learning software engineering or enterprise computing but keep in mind these are new syllabuses! Someone help me pls 😭

Planning on choosing:
- mx1
- adv eng
- eco
- phy
- engineering studies

In the end I will say it depends on the factors of enjoyment and how much do you think it'll help you with uni. Because there is a new syllabuses Enterprise computing/Software engineering could be more difficult and less educational then it should be as the teacher may have never taught it before so they will have limited knowledge on it, but learning a new language is never easy so there's also that to consider. However, if you do peruse a degree in software engineering or comp sci you're gonna be taught how to program anyway (I hope) but it might be a bit fast pace for a beginner. But it is possible to learn all these subjects by yourself but will require you to learn outside of school and manage your time around it.

Because I do comp sci and work in the software development industry my answer will be incredibly biased so I won't give it as if you do want it then it should be quite obvious. However, I will say that if you're still not sure put down the subject you think you'll enjoy initially give it a trial run and if you don't enjoy it then swap to another subject

Considering that you do not study a language atm, maybe try out korean in the first week or two of year 11 and see how you feel about the subject before making a decision on what subject to take?

sorry guys! I forgot to tell you in the post that my ethnicity is korean. However, I have struggle speaking, reading and writing it :(. NESA changed the requirements for the languages, and I am able to choose continuers.

Hii! Thanks for replying!
Yep I'm thinking of pursuing compsci or engineering atm now! But since I am korean, it would be an advantage for me to take it (since I hear the language around me everyday). I really want to spend a lot of my time on physics and maths (to make it into 4u) so I'm not too sure if picking software engineering or enterprise computing will put more onto my workload.

Well if ur pursuing computer science, wouldn't it be best if you at least try soft. engineering?

I never did a language so I don't fully know how intensive learning it will be, but since you have a Korean background I would assume that would place you in a better position to learning Korean compared to a person who comes from a background where Korean is not spoken or known. Also as I don't know how well your Software Eng teacher know about Python/JS so it could mean that if they don't know anything then you'll have to learn it by yourself. Also as learning how to program is a skill that can be taught to yourself it is fully possible to do Korean instead and also having time to focus onto getting in ext 2 maths will be helpful in uni as it'll mean you won't have to play catch-up like I did.

But I feel that knowing how to program will be very helpful as you'll learn the fundamentals and some more "complicated" stuff like OOP that can be taught to yourself but may be a bit more difficult. Also I know that people learn how to program at a different paces and some people might need a bit longer to learn how to program compared to others so learning early on could be useful so it might be useful to do Software Eng. But enterprise computing teachers stuff like cyber sec, networking and UX/UI design so if you're interested in that stuff then doing enterprise computing may be useful. Judging from what I can see it looks like Software Engineering may be a bit more technical compared to Enterprise Computing so that it something to know.

Just to add to this, take note on who will be teaching. I didn't realise this until yr9, but there are cases where schools do actually cheap out and just force teachers to teach out of their expertise, which often leads to the teacher just sitting on their computer babysitting the class, whilst everyone plays minecraft/overwatch/CSGO/Valorant in the back.
