This is for someone else but...

If I was rank 2nd on 95% and rank 1st was 95.5% (raw internal mark), and the highest exam mark was 100, ik rank 1 would get a moderated internal of 100.

Would rank 2nd automatically get 99 moderated internal, regardless of anyone else marks?

Since NESA takes into account the gaps between ranks, and this is a very small gap, would I get 99 if the highest was 100, even if the next highest exam mark was 95 lets say?

If rank 1st is on 95.5% and last is like 90% (and then last gets like 60% in the hsc) then no, if the spread is bigger in internals and smaller in externals then maybe

the spread for internals is like 20% to 95.5% with 100 people (these numbers are not exact btw)
in the hsc most will get band 5 and 6.
so will 2nd auto be 99 if highest is 100?
or same if highest is 99, will 2nd auto be 98

no thats not how it works.
- rank 1 gets highest exam mark as their moderated internal
- rank last gets lowest (where possible)
- everyone elese is moderated acording to rank as well as gaps between ranks

honestly you don’t need to worry about it a ton, in 90% of cases it might as well just be your ranking it’s a pretty minor difference

ig it just shows you only need 1 person to excel and everyone else is lifted (if you are near the top of cohort, if you are in the middle or low - you need everyone to do well)

2 people got 95, 2 got 93 that i know of
my internal for rank 3 was 92, rank 2 internal was 93
the gap was only 1-2% also

if 1 person does way better than everyone else it both pushes the top people up a fair bit but because the middle marks sum is the exact same it also brings the bottom people down a fair bit - it’s a double edged sword

I mean yeah but that’s a one mark difference and it can go both ways so it sorta averages out, the main time it makes a big difference is in cohorts with a big gap but most people aren’t in that situation

there is a particuallr subject with 100 people (i dont take it)
- 1st is 99%
- 2nd is 90%
- 3rd is like 88%

yeah again it’s hard to say because it depends on the skew of the data and a lot of other factors but probably something like that.
