Hey! Can someone please humble me and be honest, whether achieving an atar 90-95+ is possible with my rank and mark. To preface, I go to a non-selective public school which just made top 150 in the state (NSW) last year.

Semester 1: subject - mark% - rank
English Standard - 90% - 6/103
Maths Advance - 60% - 74/91 .. womp womp :(
Math Extension 1 - 48% - 56/66
Biology - 70% - 22/72
Chemistry - 78% - 15/32
Food Technology - 99% - 1/6

Semester 1 is weighting 45% of internals. I put my marks into the atar calculator, lowering my expecting mark for food tech and the result do not look promising :/
Assume I do exceptionally well for task 3 and trials, how likely am I able to guarantee a 90+? What marks should I be aiming for in task 3 and trials?
Any advice helps or atar estimations, thanks :)

Hey there,
I think honestly with the marks and ranks you have now, it is still possible to get an atar above 90. However, it will take a lot of hard work and perseverance! I graduated last year with an atar above 95 and did food technology and biology. It is currently holidays, so if you are serious about getting above 90 (which you can!), take some time to go back and solidify your knowledge and make a plan for semester 2. I currently tutor both privately and at AOS, for English and Biology. However, if you want I have Band 6 Food Technology notes I can give you which I used during my HSC! Good luck 🤞

Thanks Legend! You are motivating me to persevere, that's also very generous of you to share your notes. I'll pass on it cause my teacher bombards me with heaps already. Thank you again for your advice and help, it is much appreciated :):):)

Hi, can I check, what is there to get 97+ in Biology or to do state rank equivalent marks in Biology? How much a tutoring centre such as Zhang's can influence? Or a private tutor in Biology can help? Or a student needs to do own notes? Is it all about memorising in Biology? Any tips would be helpful? Does Biology scale as good as Chemistry or Physics or Economics if I have to choose 2 subjects from these 4, which 2 should I pick?

I do biology and I reckon its pretty fun when you understand what’s happening lol. Bio is more of a 50/50 split on memorising concepts as well as applying those concepts to analyse and interpret data (like reading graphs, tables, explaining trends and coming to a conclusion etc). I recommend looking at the past HSC papers to get a feel of the subject. Bio doesn’t scale as well as chem or phys from what i’ve heard but you should ultimately choose subjects that you’re interested in and not based on scaling (because you’re more likely to do well in subjects you like)

Thnx. Are you planning to do Medicine? Do people take Biology because they want to try for Medicine.

Yes, I agree with do the 2 you enjoy! Even in uni, I find myself performing better in the courses I enjoy because I am more motivated to complete the work and learn the content! If you are struggling to learn the content, understand concepts and not sure how to answer questions/ structure responses, a tutor certainly can help! I have seen my students in biology transform their marks! In saying this, in order to achieve high marks (namely a band 6 or atar over 95), a tutor is not an inherent requirement.

Is good quality notes not so important in subject like Economics, Biology, Chemistry you mean?

For biology, having good notes for most is important! However, depending on learning style students put a different level of importance on “notes”. For instance, if your teacher does not provide class notes or resources other than the textbook and you use your notes as a method of self teaching (summarising textbook and online resources) than they may find it more important than another student who gets excellent class notes/ tutoring resources. In saying this, having examples and concepts that you find hard or forget as well as questions (multiple choice or short answer) that you did not answer well in your notes is pretty important

How much effort do I need to put to get 97 in Biology which may be equivalent to state rank? Any Zhang's or Cognito which one is good for Biology or Private Tutor?
