Hi!!!
Ok to keep this short im a selective student at a partially selective skl who hopes to do ONE non-atar subject for yr 11 and drop it for yr 12
I want to do ceramics alongside the following:
Ext math
Adv math
Adv eng
Chem
Physics
Home language continuers

my home language scales bad but i HIGHLY doubt ill get below 85 n the rest obv scale well
Anywho my parents (mostly mum) is against me doing non atar bc she is worried something might happen in yr 12 n i wont be able to drop it or there might not be enough units (which isnt the case since im doing 13 units) and i get her worry but idk i RLLY WANT TO DO CERAMICS IT SOUNDS SO FUN

Anyways any tips? Should i continue trying to persuade my mum? Or should i just give up?
if i dont end up doing ceramics (which is closer to the reality atp) im going to do either music 1 or modern/ancient history (havent decided yet)

PLZ HELP CUS I ONLY HAVE TILL WED NEXT WEEK BEFORE SUBJECT SELECTION CLOSES I RLLY NEED HELP!!!!!

Home Language -- As long as you do well in your home language, scoring 85 or higher, it will benefit your ATAR. It'll also boost your ATAR if you perform well, so focus on achieving a high mark there.

Ceramics -- Honestly, l'd be like if it doesnt relate to what you want to do in life, dont bother. But seeing your passion to do it, l think ceramics would be a fantastic creative outlet amidst your heavy academic subjects. It'll allow you to de-stress and engage in something you’re passionate about. And given that you have 13 units, dropping ceramics in Year 12 shouldn’t be an issue if you need to adjust your workload.

Other options consideration:
Music 1 - A great choice if you have an interest in music. It’s creative and can be a nice balance with your other subjects. But l'm not sure if its mostly content or you actually get to do music music, so i dont recommend this. Scales really low as well, i think.
Modern/Ancient History - Interesting but extremely content-heavy. Requires a lot of reading and memorisation, which might add to the stress of your already demanding subjects. Not recommended.

For music if i drop it in yr 12 (which is most probably) scaling wont affect correct? Because im a guitarist but dont hope to do music in life n one of my teachers told me that in my case it‘ll be better if i just do it as a hobby instead but shes modern history n was ‘promoting’ her subject so i cant really take her word for it

any thoughts?

look, modern history, its like legal but l'm sure its more difficult and has a hell lot of memorisation, don't take my word for it, but ppl r interested in it, but my school doesn't offer it. No, don't take her word for it, ask her students, get some information, ie is it content heavy, and if so, do not take it. you are already taking 4 difficult subjects. Even if you are a genius, for instance, you are going to struggle if you add more content-heavy topics into it.

Just get in contact with her students, ask them questions about the subject, just don't to ancient, it scales lower, i think. As for music, scaling won't affect scaling. l say do ceramics, you'll enjoy it, and gives u a break from everything else. Ironically, l hated legal, and l was forced into it bc our school says 'girls cant do physics' even tho i scored 100 on this test to get into it, but now l love it, and l'm getting 90s in it too.

Overall: Do what you will enjoy, esp with your alr confirmed subjects.

there's nothing wrong with picking a non-atar course that you'll drop - especially one you'll have fun with, a lot of people in my grade did that (they picked slr so they could have 12 units instead of 13 and thus have more study periods), this also gives you more time to focus on your other subjects as for the kids who did slr they just chilled and yapped with their friends in class and did all their assignments for slr the day before / the day it was due

modern classes were probably the most fun i ever had in school (i did modern) but only if u actually take it seriously and have some interest in the subject, otherwise you're in for a bit of pain with content memorisation and learning how to respond to questions and write essays

Its cus she currently teaches me history (mandatory) n she fully brought in 4 current modern history students to say their experiences THE WHOLE PERIOD n it was kind of convincing but ALL teachers try to sponsor their class n year advisors/career advisors just be like ‘do what u want etc.’ BUT I DONT KNOW WHAT I WANT

anyways abt ceramics as i said my mum is rlly against it n i dont want to go against her word my dad however said do what u want n i’ll sign it bc ur mum just wants u to do what she thinks is good… but idk ill prob put ceramics as a reserve tho i do rlly want to do it… the whole idea actually came from my classmate since she is doing non atar SLR (sports life recreation i think?) n i was like yh i want to do non atar w my whole thought of ‘im selective i should do only high ranking atar smart subjects’ she rlly opened my eyes

I do Modern History rn but I would say that if you aren't good at essays don't pick Modern, it is a very essay-based subject.

That's true the scaling isn't great but also you do a lot of music in music??? You can pick what you do for your HSC, I believe you have to choose 4 or 3 things, which can be a composition, music analysis, and performance, possibly something else. Ask your music teachers what year 12 Music 1 will look like, what the assessments are like, etc. The learning itself might not be a lot of 'music music' but for your HSC you can literally do 4 performances and be done with it, but you need a hell of a lot of trust in yourself for that, and also, mastering 4 pieces is not easy haha. So I wouldn't exactly recommend music either unless you think you've got the skillset you need for it, but in my personal experience it's very fun and a fantastic outlet (which you already have ceramics for)
