I’m currently in Year 11, and I have 12 units. I’m struggling with chemistry and would like to drop it, but I don’t want to end up with only 10 units in Year 12.

My brother, who is in Year 12 at a different school, dropped chemistry and switched to Investigating Science. The problem is that at my school, chemistry is not on the same line, and I doubt they’ll be able to change the timetable since there’s only one chemistry class. A student in my chemistry class is already doing Investigating Science, so I don’t think the classes can be switched.

Do you think it’s possible for the school to allow me to switch to Investigating Science or even take it as an online course? I’m planning to ask my teachers about this, but I want to know if online courses for this subject are possible.

it depends on what other subjects your school offers that run at the same time as chem, so you might have to check that out before making a decision

i dont think you can switch subjects because you need to have the hours completed for the prelim course. but i think investigating is an exception to this or smth like that

languages are usually online because people undertake them through different schools.
if you're not able to drop chem and do investigating, if chem is the subject you're struggling with the most there are high chances it will be your lowest and possibly wont count to your atar?

  • online courses can be shitty if you have a really disengaged teacher but if there are actual teachers in your school that you can go to for help outside of class time for clarification you should be fine
  • investigating science and extension subjects like history and science and beginner languages are the only things i can think of atm that you can pick up without any y11 stuff for it, im sure there are more
  • you could drop to 10, unless you feel like there is a decent chance you might bomb out on one of your courses. a lot of ppl will drop to 10 units so that they can get more study time and really focus on fewer subjects to maximize their marks in them
  • if you're not able to drop chem and do investigating, if chem is the subject you're struggling with the most there are high chances it will be your lowest and possibly wont count to your atar?

thank you for your reply! i am happy with my other subjects but you just don't know what could happen w 10 units its too risky. i doubt my school even lets people pick up investigating because i dont know anyone who has but i am still going to ask about it

yess its always worth asking! i get not wanting to do 10 units too, just look into your options and maybe talk to your school about what they are willing to offer. in y12 schedules might also get switched around so maybe investigating wont be on the same line as chem? just talk to them maybe you will figure smth out
