1. Usually come in with a general idea of what you're planning to write about if you're not aiming to memorise a pre-prepared response. If you're still not confident, practice with the myriad of past trial and HSC papers available to you. Have an extended metaphor / motif / symbol that you weave in throughout the piece from the very beginning that basically represents the point of your piece and the question so you keep the point sustained. Also a well-weaved-in piece just looks good anyway so bonus marks for you if done well
2. Depends on the mark allocation. A 10-12 marker should be around 600-700 words to accommodate for the 300-400 word reflection. A 15 marker should be 800-900, and then a 100-200 reflection. And a 20 marker should be 900-1000 since you have no reflection at all (I don't think beyond these numbers they're going to give you a whack mark distribution)
3. Practice writing on the spot using HSC and Trials. Look at Band 6 exemplars to see how they do things (there are definitely some floating around on BOS and on AceHSC). If you read widely, imitating an author's writing style or certain phrases / techniques they use can help a lot, but this is more of a long-term strategy
