I have been planning to drop biology since last term however I have received my atar estimate and my maths mark did not count for me. The difference between my bio mark and maths mark was 6 aggregates.. is this a lot?

Also these are my pros and cons, what should I do???

Maths advBiology
PROS
  • If I drop, I won't have to risk my atar getting dragged down but I also don't know if I would necessarily do well in biology due to all my subjects being content heavy.
  • If I drop, this makes my life easier as I have so many other content other subjects ( mod, legal, biz , history ext )
  • If I drop , I will also get one period a day to focus on my other subjects
  • I don't fw the bio content and I enjoy maths more than bio
CONS
  • If I drop, I may have to do a bridging course because it is assumed knowledge for my course ( Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Economic or Bachelor of Commerce/ Law at UNSW)
  • If I drop, I lose my only objective subject that I won't have to do crazy memorisation for
  • I also have a rlly shit teacher for bio so I will be teaching myself all the content and that will just make my life harder esp bc as stated above, my subjects are all content heavy
  • If I drop, I risk maths adv fully dragging my atar down.
  • Idk if I will be able to do better in year 12 with the time gained as a result of dropping bio ( taking a risk ).

drop bio imo. maths is assumed knowledge which is important for u (yeah u can do a bridging course but ive heard they suck), and you're gonna work harder at and be likely to do better in a subject that you enjoy. also all your subjects are crazy memorisation heavy, and trust me - for the HSC that's no joke (it's way worse than yr 11...)

mind you I can't speak for the aggregate value as I haven't rlly wrapped my head around that

So you just got into year 12, try your best for both subjects in the first term and see which one you think you will do better in after you get the marks. But looking at the combination of subjects you do, most of them are subjects that require lots of memorisation. So if you don't want to end up memorisation for more than half your subjects then I would more likely drop bio in compared to maths adv. Also scaling for maths advanced is better than biology, but as I said, if you can try to keep it for the first term and see how you go. But if one subject is impacting your studies overall then I would drop bio. And to get a mid band 5 for maths you need around a 65 to 70 and im confident you can do this.

i agree, drop bio you definitely want to have a subject thats not pure content and advanced is easy to get good at, you just need to be consistant with revision throughout the year. math is a nice break from all the content and memorisation. and yea adv scales well

Given your pros and cons, it might make sense to drop biology if:

  • You believe you can maintain or improve your performance in math with the extra time.
  • You're confident you can manage the prerequisites for your desired degree without biology.
However, if you feel that having a science subject will strengthen your application and you can handle the workload, it might be worth sticking with it.

Ultimately, trust your instincts about which subject aligns best with your strengths and future goals! If possible, consider discussing your situation with a teacher or academic advisor for additional insights if you havent already done so!

Hope this helps 😀
