I don’t get it. There was only 99 band 6s in 2023 out of the tens of thousands of students who do it, How is it that hard? do they mark it harshly? Does a 90 raw scale down? Im so confused. And why does maths standard not this bad. At this rate I’m more likely to get a band 6 in Chemistry over English standard. Am I screwed?

english standard has:
1. selection bias, people good at english would prob take english advanced
2. awful alignment
3. math standard is genuinely easy as hell, aint comparable to anything english related.

it’s not harder it’s just that a lower percentage of people score high enough to get a band 6, since most high achieving english students do advanced. if you work hard, it’s 100% possible to get a band 6 (i could have gotten one but i fumbled the externals lol)

Because they artifically align the marks lower in english standard to punish you for not doing shitty advanced.

it's not like standard has a fundamentally different test than advanced, they're still writing subjects testing writing and analytic capacity. i think its pretty safe to assume someone getting a b6 in advanced isn't going to have a hard time getting a b6 in standard.

isn't the mark scaling only in relation to atar? a band 6 in standard scales worse than a b6 in advanced, but its not like they take a raw 92 in the exam and drag you down to an 84 as far as i know.

if someone was confidently able to get a band 6, they wouldn't be taking standard english. its the same reason why math ext 1 and 2 generally have high e4 rates if i recall correctly, because you take those subjects if you are confident in them or enjoy them.

The difference is usually in a handful of different questions, while advanced have their own (usually 2) questions for marking - standard will usually share a question with an English studies level question for the short answer component.
The issue is that standard don't get the same type of questions to achieve the marking for advanced, you can still absolutely achieve a band 6!
The scaling for English is unfortunately quite unfair towards standard :(

math standerd is just glorified year 10 math, when english standard is just a slightly easier version of English advanced
