i have a very important test tomorrow (to see if which level of maths we are allowed to do: std, adv or ext - im recommended for ext but if i fail i get dropped to std)

n idk how to do these ive tried all the methods also every ai thing gives a different answer i need someone to explain them to me bc i forgot them IMG_9828.PNG

the purple is me n apparently my answer is wrong (i tried writing it step-by-step bc i usually dont solve math 'neatly' so try to understand it if its not clear)

You've multiplied the first term by root x and the second term by root y without dividing again in the third line of working

no sorry it's like this
(√x/√y) x √x - (√y/√x) x √y

so it would be
x/√xy - y/√xy

combine:
x-y/√xy

thats what i meant by i dont write it neatly bc i just do it in my brain

wait i just realised after i got
x^2-y^2/√xy

should i rationalise it? would that give me the answer? (we aren't given answer btw thats why i had to use ai)

you tried using photomath on your phone? or symbolab is my next go to (its a website). Mathway is also an option tho a little worse. Wolfram alpha is a bit better than mathway but its ai powered

this looks like year 10 cambridge math textbook questions

mate none of this will be asked in advanced nor extension... don't drop just cause of these types of questions (which is quite frankly harder than what you will be asked in the hsc for advanced).

literally no idea where my teacher got them from (she gave us a revision mock exam)

also yh the whole drop thing isnt in my hand if i fail the teacher WILL drop me done - no negotiation (she is the headteacher n has a deal w the deputy)

i dont understand how it went to √xy (x-y)

bc for me i just explained (x-y)(xy) which is x^2-y^2
Are you talking about from MY second line of working to my third line of working? That's because

algebraic manipulation is a pretty fundamental skill, only reason they don't ask these types of questions in internal exams is because they are too easy and out of syllabus for hsc not because its hard but bc its foundational knowledge you should have done this in 5.3 or whatever

@C2H6O
when i posted this here i was also sending my question to everyone ik n my uncle (math teacher) split it in half
so he did:
[(x^1/2 y^-1/2)/x^-1 y^-1] - [(x^-1/2 y^1/2)/x^-1 y^-1]

and he just used the rule a^n / a^m = a^n-m which ultimately gave the answer u did

now i get it both ways, my uncles way (keeping them with a fraction as a power) and urs (changing the fraction to a surd)

(im relieved now: need to study logarithms now 😓)

Ok great! Good luck with the rest of your revision and all the best for tmr. Don't stress and you'll do great
