What do you think of Never Let Me Go? I haven't read the book but I adored the movie and want to give the book a go at some stage this year.ishiguro is king. idc what the haters say he deserved that nobel prize
1. remains of the day cos i'm #basic like that but honestly i think it's one of the greatest works of fiction written at one of the few books where i felt upset/sad for the narrator at the end after bro fumbled the bag with his life to just focus on his obsession with duty and sense of self that ends up with him deceiving himself. i'm not articulating it particularly well here but the whole book is a tragedy and i worship this book on a daily basis
2. the unconsoled. i thought i was gonna hate this book because of how dense and confusing it was at times but everything sort of came together in the end and you realise that it's not really ryder's story but moreso the story of a general character who starts off as a boris and then a stephan and then a ryder and then a brodsky. it was kinda infuriating at parts cos u realise that if ryder just stops at the right place at the right time he'll be able to find some sort of fulfilment or satisfaction but he just doesn't, but it made me admire ishiguro more for that
3. @its_ace21 will probably roll her eyes at this but i'd say buried giant. i really like medieval + fantasy themes so the setting was good and this is probably also one of my favourites because of how it explores memory (like all of ishiguro's books) but also the added exploration of how history is revised through querig the dragon and her breath and how it affects the britons and the saxons (probs biased cos my artist of the floating world hsc essay is about historical revisionism and denial but to see this theme again in another ishiguro book... yummy) the love story is ehhh for me icl but i loved how we slowly and progressively saw that axl and beatrice's love carried a lot of resentment and hatred in it that got erased because of the dragon. also i just really like the boatman character as well
ik u asked masaken LMAO SRY so do wait for her reply asw but never let me go is phenomenal and one of ishiguros most popular works for a reason. it’s tragic and sentimentalWhat do you think of Never Let Me Go? I cried at the ending of that#6
Title: Frankenstein
Author: Mary Shelley
First published: 1818
Pages: 202
MY RATING: 9.5/10
I’m sure everyone knows the premise of Frankenstein so I won’t summarise that, I’m just really glad I got around to reading such a slay. Shelley pioneered science fiction with this. I love that Victor and Frankenstein were both deeply virtuous but also messed up in their own way, the detail in building and fleshing out their characters and psyches was really great. they are both incredible individuals. so interesting how a creator can nourish and care for the life of his creation only to reject and detest it the moment it exists, can’t blame Frankenstein for going nuts. loved it!!! reading Hamnet next
Was so lucky to study this in Extension 1 English, really one of the greatest and most influential sci-fi stories ever.#6

omg so sorry for the late reply but i LOVE it, i watched the movie after the book (that scene with andrew garfield toward the end after tommy and kathy's visit to the principal(???) of their school was so emotional and well-done), i also think it's really good for people who want to get into ishiguro (or like returning to ishiguro) because the writing is pretty simple and banal but i think that kinda prose is what also adds to the themes of the book (the almost indifferent and "clinical" treatment of a certain group of characters) and also makes the emotional beats hit harderWhat do you think of Never Let Me Go? That's awesome, I've lost my copy of it somewhere but I'm hoping I can find it soon!omg so sorry for the late reply but i LOVE it, i watched the movie after the book (that scene with andrew garfield toward the end after tommy and kathy's visit to the principal(???) of their school was so emotional and well-done), i also think it's really good for people who want to get into ishiguro (or like returning to ishiguro) because the writing is pretty simple and banal but i think that kinda prose is what also adds to the themes of the book (the almost indifferent and "clinical" treatment of a certain group of characters) and also makes the emotional beats hit harder

STOP I was about to start reading this series because I borrowed the first book of the heir duology from the library but apparently u have to read this series first to get a better understanding of the world/ theres spoilers in the duology for this seriesTitle: An Ember in the Ashes Series (I'm reviewing all four books at once)
Author: Sabaa Tahir
Published: 2015 (book 1) - 2020 (book 4)
MY RATING: 7/10
- ofc nothing makes more sense than the deadliest man in the academy falling for his mother's servant slave instead of his girl bsf that he's known for more than a decade... sure!! then wonders why his bsf is upset when she's been in love w him for a year... sureeeee sure sure sure. i wish the main relationship in this book was explored more deeply, i still don't know what specifically attracted him from the start. he kept talking abt her gold eyes but... is that it???
- i LOVE that all the women in this book had a character arc. the female mc wasn't just born the most powerful, she had to work her way up. and the "tough/more masculine" female side characters weren't born w gentleness and sympathy, they learned it throughout the series. it just depends on how everyone was raised, which is so accurate!
- i also like how men weren't entirely villainised in this series. I've read books where the women were so empowered to the point where i didn't resonate with a single man apart from the male love interest, which is a bit disturbing and shouldn't be the author's main intention imo. the men in this series each had their own arcs, loved it.
- the height/size difference trope was a bit weird, she kept talking abt his big hands like she was in heat or something girl calm down pls. have some shame.
- why did they boombayah like 2 days after her mum was unalived by HIS mum. on the forest floor. while he was possessed by a jinn. dirty animals. then mum came back alive? but then she became a jinn to save the male mc. okayy!
- AUTHOR KILLED OFF THE ONE CHARACTER I ACTUALLY HAD ZERO PROBLEM WITH, RIP AVITAS HARPER YOU WILL ALWAYS BE LOVED.
- the poetry in this book was fireeee, a lot of play on words. so many quotable lines!
overall, it was pretty good but not great. yk how there's just some series that make u feel so empty after u finish reading them bc u get so attached to the characters? i was halfway there with this series, quite touching but not as impactful as other series.
standing ovulation!
next up: idkkk someone recommend!
