hello everyone, i am trying to decide what subjects i should carry into the hsc this year. i do:
biology
chemistry
physics
engineering studies
accelerated maths advanced (hsc done in 2024)
english advanced
sor 1

i received my hsc maths marks and i'm not happy and would like to retake the subject, but as a result i am considering dropping physics because it is my weakest subject. i also don't like maths so i'm not keen on retaking it. should i just keep my maths mark and take physics anyways? should i drop physics and retake maths?

my biggest issue is that i don't see myself putting much effort into maths, but i know that my physics mark for the hsc will probably end up being lower than my current maths mark. thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

I think theres a few things that could affect this. Depends on 1) what atar/course are you aiming for and the requirements for that, 2) how well you are doing in your other subjects, 3) is there realistically a chance that you do better in maths adv this time round, or will it be about the same, 3) do you enjoy physics but the marks arent there or is physics a pain as well?

If you could do better in maths adv this time round by putting a real effort in (push through for 3 more terms), it's worth giving it a shot and dropping physics if the marks don't improve, cause you already know the content and you just need to sharpen your skills.
Else if you don't see yourself trying hard enough in maths, keep your mark and just really put in effort for physics
Otherwise could you consider doing really well for your other subjects so you have 11 units (but only doing 9) and dropping phys, which may help pull up your atar. try experiment with some atar calculators (UAC calculator may be most accurate) and see whether you can realistically get the mark you're aiming for so you know how you stand in terms of marks for your other subjects.
Best of luck with everything!

physcis is hard asf, trust me cos i dealt with it. if u dont like math, all physics will really seem to be esp in yr 12 is math - cos thats tech what its based off. i'd drop physics, and just put effort into the math, if u dont put effort u cant expect success imo.

i'm looking at a 80-90 atar for my course which i believe is within my range due to my other subjects, and it won't require physics. i'm pretty apathetic about physics though, the content is more interesting than maths, but the nature of the course is more difficult which makes it less enjoyable.

i've been leaning towards retaking maths and dropping physics for awhile, and i'm probably not going to drop physics and keep my current maths mark. i will say that i am concerned about this years maths hsc being more difficult than last years, seeing as we're nearing the end of the curriculm before its revision in 2026.

thank you for the input!
