Liberal Party considers mandatory military service policy for all Australian school leavers

Do you support the Liberal Party’s idea to conscript all Australian 18 year olds?

Liberal Party Vice President Teena McQueen says conscription for school leavers is an “excellent idea”.

“They can perhaps learn to love and appreciate their country by doing that,” Ms McQueen told Sky News host Jenna Clarke.

“I’d look at compulsory service of some sort after school.”
Given that this year is an election year, what does everyone think of a potential return of military conscription if the Liberal Party/Peter Dutton wins and decides this is the way forward? Would you support the change, or would you protest all the way to Parliament House?

Bad idea, it's just a standard re-fried "appeal to the base" policy that has zero chance of becoming reality. The ADF is usually strongly against conscription, even though they have recruitment issues. Due to the volume of conscripts, it will be very expensive and unproductive to train them. This is compounded by the fact that conscripts are vastly inferior to professional soldiers in terms of morale and aptitude. Having worked with many ex-ADF staff over the years, I can say that 90% of them are outstanding to work with - they are very capable and versatile in terms of skills. This wont translate to young people forced to be there and it could bring down the quality of the ADF as a whole.

The money spent training them could better be used providing subsidies for young people, like cheaper driver's licences/rego fees etc. That will help young people far more than wasting their time with conscription.

If the Liberal Party does win and Dutton decides to enact this policy, could the current ATAR system be changed so that your ATAR factors in both your performance at school and your performance in the mandatory military service (like an overall ADF aptitude score) for university admissions?

I don’t see that happening or why they’d do that, the universities determine their own entry schemes and they wouldn’t have any interest in your ADF aptitude score

he's been given an open lay-up this election but he's trying to shoot it backwards from halfcourt

I think he has done pretty well considering he is carrying more baggage then an airport. Also, he needs to make inroads with the Teal seats, hence the more moderate tone.

Instead they should do conscription for year 10 school leavers. Year 10 school leavers often end up as tradies, therefore they are way more fit in serving in the military than others.

Then where would we get new tradies from? Especially in a time where we have to double the amount of homes and apartments we currently have
