Hi, I have an upcoming modern history task. It is an unseen essay, with 45 minutes time limit.
I'm wondering if any past students have advice on the best method to prepare?

make essay plans for the syllabus dot points that are in the topic assessed
practice writing an essay to a question - use what is in your essay plans to guide you, practice writing it in 40 mins.
when you see the question take 5 minutes to plan your essay - come up with a thesis/argument and dot down what your body paragraphs will be.
use your content as evidence to support your argument, don't content dump.

if you'd like I can send you one of my HSC essay plans that got me a band 6 in modern as an example

Hi! Thankyou so much that's a lot of help! I would really appreciate having a look at that plan so I can use it as a guide!

I was also wondering how many plans you created? I feel like the questions can vary so much which is why I am struggling to know where to start.

I created a plan for every syllabus dot point (or just about) if i remember correctly - i did purposely ignore a couple and hoped I wouldn't get asked (luckily i didnt).

It seems overwhelming at first, but if you start writing some plans now it'll be really great preparation for trials/HSC. When you lay it all out the things they can ask you for national study are not too bad and widespread, a lot in Russia interconnects.

for example, this was a doc i made to link all my conflict essay plans corresponding to the dot points - it is a lot of work, modern in general is sooo much work and requires a lot of preparation so its good to start early.

I made this around trials and finished during the HSC (I'd probably do it earlier when you're actually doing the topics in class)

the essay plans had a question - or multiple - around a syllabus point, sometimes they were actual past HSC questions, or sometimes they were practice questions I got from a textbook. I wrote a brief argument statement, (what I'd argue at the top of the page) and my body paragraph arguments. Then I'd usually dot point paragraphs and organise content to fit there (I got this from pretty extensive notes I'd made throughout the year)- I'd memorise the essay plans content and then use them to write practice essays. I'll send you one!

Modern has a lotttt of content so this ensured I was only memorising what was important to an essay - also helps to avoid content dumping if you're in the practice of that, memorising it in a plan will hopefully avoid content dumping everything in your brain on the topic. Deliberately selecting your historical content also helps you solidify what you're arguing this evidence proves. There were some essay plans I wrote as practice essays and received feedback on. For me personally, once I have written a practice essay I kind of remember the majority of it, at least the argument and a good portion of the content, so that's what I did :)
