HSC

  • Gravimetric analysis
  • Isotopes
  • Homogeneous and heterogeneous substances
  • SPDF notation
  • Schrodinger's model
  • Emission spectroscopy
  • Allotropy and metallic bonding
  • Bonding spectrum
  • Limiting reagent questions
  • Empirical formulae
  • Gas laws
  • Heat capacity (MCAT or q = mcΔT)
I know that generally these topics will/may be included within a question, and may not as obviously be put as the main topic of a question, but I just wanted to know whether these pieces of the Year 11 Syllabus could, at all, be assessed in the HSC? I have not seen many people mention these topics as things you should revise for Year 12.

it says here ( Assessment and reporting | NSW Education Standards ) under the heading 'HSC exam specifications' that the year 11 course is assumed knowledge so yea ig they aren't prohibited from involving the above material but typically they aren't the central focus (mod 5-8 is) but it is probs worth knowing well becuz u neva know y'k

Looking down the list, I think they are all relevant to HSC level chemistry. At our high school, the teachers didn’t teach the SPDF rules and notations and told my kids it wasn’t part of the syllabus so no one in the classes learnt it (including my kids even when I offered to explain to them) which is a shame because understanding these concepts helps with understanding the transition metals whose properties don’t conveniently follow rules from left to right as the elements towards each end of the periodic table do.

Anecdotally, I once marked a postgrad exam paper, in which, the candidate obviously knew absolutely nothing about gravimetric analysis and made up complete rubbish about measuring gravity which was simply a waste of their exam time. If they had studied this concept at high school, not even undergrad, level, they probably would have scored a mark or two.

  • Gravimetric analysis - YES
  • Isotopes - not specifically but it comes up during Module 8 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy
  • Homogeneous and heterogeneous substances - NO
  • SPDF notation - NO
  • Schrodinger's model - NO
  • Emission spectroscopy - YES
  • Allotropy and metallic bonding - NO
  • Bonding spectrum - Not specifically but it comes up during Module 7 conjugation
  • Limiting reagent questions - Hell YES
  • Empirical formulae - Year 11 content, unlikely but useful to keep in mind
  • Gas laws - not specifically but it comes up during Module 5 gaseous equilibria
  • Heat capacity (MCAT or q = mcΔT) - Hell YES

SPDF notation and Schrodinger model are both included in the syllabus.

Thanks to @Eagle Mum for that extract from the Year 11 modules. Of course predicting what topics are going to be examined in the HSC is a thankless task, and entirely subjective, but my comments are based on the past history of HSC Chemistry papers. I have not seen a question that specifically examined the electronic s,p,d,f structure of the elements (correct me if I'm wrong here) nor have I seen a question that examined the Schrodinger model of electron orbitals.

What do i need to know from year 7-10 chemistry for year 11 and 12 chem?? - im trying to go over all the fundamentals and get them down pat.. but even in textbooks all the topics are a bit adhoc and theres no like "revision from past years"

not rlly anything for me they just retaught most things
most chem from year7-10 should be pretty basic anyway and most of it is relevant

probably just like balancing chemical equations tbh, i think most of the theory u honestly get retaught at the start of yr 11. as long as u keep on top of it once u go through it in class i think its chill
