my teacher goes on and on about how when it comes to analysing unseen texts in exams "you either got it or you dont". i would say im quite good at writing analytical essays, but when it comes to annotating, finding techniques, etc, in an unseen text im quite slow. any way to improve this?

Your teacher is so wrong omg. The only way you can really get better at identifying techniques is familiarising yourself with them - I personally used to use palm cards. Then apply them through practice papers especially under timed conditions. Theres quite literally nothing you can do to get better at short answer other than to practice through past questions.

idk what your teacher is on that is such a lie. English is my WORST subject like ever. I used to score around the average mark but after alot of practice I ended up with a 18/20 for the sac section of my yearly exams. Its not the best mark ever but it goes to show that there is always something you can do about it

i improved my english grades so much in year 10, i averaged like 60%-70% and the teacher said advanced wasnt the course for me (even though i was in the top eng class at the time) but i persisted and in the yearly exam i got 19/20 and i was so happy!!! im loving eng adv rn and im so glad im not in standard, the content in adv is soooo much better

imo, the best thing you can do is practice questions. they'll never give texts that require you to look too closely to find techniques, so once you do them a bunch you'll learn to pick up on the patterns and recognise techniques faster. i like to try to see the text as a big picture first, the broadest/easiest techniques to initially pick up on are usually things like tone, structure, setting, point of view etc. that can give you a clue for more specific techniques; breaking down the question into key terms (verb, key themes) is also really important for this since they're essentially giving you hints on what to look for
