what qualities does a major work need to reach that level? i’m especially interested in what markers look for beyond just a “good idea”?? like originality, conceptual depth, and execution.

any insight from past e4 students or teachers would be really appreciated.

I am doing Ext 2 at the moment, working on a critical response:

Honestly, like with all English subjects, the marking is going to be subjective.

I think the key to an E4 is creativity, authenticity, and pushing the boundaries of what high school English has taught you, mirroring the sort of styles/forms that university researchers and students undertake. You want to produce something super nuanced or something personal that speaks to who you are as a young person in 2026; something that appeals to your marker (think of a typical SBS/ABC news viewer, middle aged woman, more progressive leaning).

Just remember to not forget your ability to write cohesively and with purpose; do not go overboard with academically verbose writing, as the course is an extension of advanced and Ext 1 (an opportunity for you to produce something on your own accord, as previously, the school has told you what to study/write about/read about/research.)

Ext 2 provides you with a cool creative outlet. Pick something that you are interested in and that is not a chore for you to write about.

At my school, the previous E4 students for Ext 2 produced really niche creative short stories, with one as an allegory for their own family's migrant experience from Asia. But of course not everyone is a migrant or with firsthand experience of systematic oppression.

Out of the 3 points you raised I would argue originality and execution would be the most important E4 qualities. But anyways, Ext 2 pays hard, sustained work (or so I hope it does).

Keep pestering your teacher for feedback on drafts and work together on producing something that YOU are satisfied with in YOUR process of becoming a more proficient writer.

Anyways, happy writing!
