Hi all, I just got first my exam back and the median was 43/50 and the mean was 42/50. I saw that I got a mark of 44/50 which wasn't too bad but there turned out to be a mistake where they accidentally marked something correctly when it was wrong, knocking me back to a mark of 43/50. Since there are a lot of people aroudn the middle mark areas, I feel like although I've done the right thing I've probably gone down so many ranks since there's a lot of people who get the same mark in my school... I get that this is my first assessment with a weighting of 20% but the fact that I might be at a lower position than many others make me pretty nervous about getting a Band 6 in the long run and how it'll affect my final internal rank.
I'd like some opinions about anyone who knows well about ranks, thanks 😭

hmmm yeah I'm probably in a similar position and I did so trash in my task 1's idk how I can make a comeback and get a b6. But ur probably right abt a 43 making ur ranks go down by a lot but it depends how many people got a 44 to see if there's that much of a difference

actually i mean ig if you're wrong u can't really fight for it

i would say not to worry abt it tho
it's probably not gonna be the deciding factor between you getting b5 and b6, but it probably will be the deciding factor of you getting r10 instead of r9 for example

Okay I don't want to show off or anything, but here is my experience in Mathematics Standard 2.

In internal assessments I got raw 75s twice and averaged 82 overall, being ranked 2nd overall. Bear in mind that my school is awful in terms of band 6 count, so a high rank was easy. I ended up with a HSC mark of 98 in then end because I did well in the HSC exam.

However, I was also averaging 82 in Physics and 2nd also in my cohort. But I ended up getting an overall HSC mark of 83.

Thus, ranks have little correlation to your HSC mark. So do not keep panicking after every assessment task. You are fine.

You might even state rank if you manage to do well in the exam.
ranks have more correlation with your HSC mark than marks be fr

only your cumulative rank matters. the difference between 44/50 and 43/50 isn't much and you should be able to make up for that difference in your other tasks so it should be fine

don't overthink rank for a band 6 tho. once your skill is at a decent enough level you should get a band 6 anyway

Doesn't matter. Don't worry about it. You're already get a band 6, with the curoff being a raw 66/74 depending on the year.

When teachers say that rankings are important, they are usually over simplifying moderation. It is a much more complex process that you should not worry about. Just do your best.

At the end of the day, see how you can refine this. You already increased your mark from an 80 to an 88, which is a massive improvement. In no time you will be hitting the raw 90s if you keep doing your best.
it is lwk ridiculous to call saying ranks important an oversimplification of moderation. I get your point tho

43/50 on an internal test doesn't mean they'll get a band 6 tho. HSC is genuinely harder than almost all school papers. some schools have harsh marking and difficult tests but if the mean is 42/50, i'm not inclined to believe either of those are the case.
