Recently I got back my essay for english year 10 term 1 poetry study and I got a 14/20
I have always been trash at english but this is my worst mark since year 7. I do well (averaging 95s) in most of my subjects except for english, and I am definitely better at science and math (ranking top 10 out of 120) compared to english..
My school is known for being good at english (top 10 selective school) so my ranking for english is kinda cooked. In year 11 I'm planning to do english advanced because my school doesn't offer standard.
Tutoring is not an option for me cause it's too expensive for my family to afford..
My teacher told me to improve personal voice and explaining my techniques, but I don't understand how to build a voice but remain analytical?? I know if I apply myself, I could get better marks but I don't know how and all my classmates seem to know what they are doing because they have private tutors

Personal voice is about like having an argument that’s includes ur own stance on the question and u need to make it stand out from others. But tbh in the hsc ur personal voice doesn’t even matter and can be the same from ur school cause different markers mark it. I think if u can’t get a tutor, u can submit stuff for feedback to ur teacher and seek other past students u know and people on here. @tigerian can also help

studying for eng is diff from other subjects. its not very straightforward like maths where u can js do a bunch of practise questions and improve by that exclusively. if u consistently do practise essays and get feedback (which u presumably apply respectively) then u will do well! it takes a while to get better at writing so its super good that ur willing to improve early on

also y10, even y11, arent endgame so dont beat urself up for flunking exams

there are a bunch of veterans here on BOS for eng adv, you should most likely ask them for help.

Honestly as stupid and simple as it sounds: Ask your school teachers for feedback, constantly(You can even ask your last year teachers or any new teachers willing to mark your work). Annoy the hell out of them even. They're there to help you and you should take the most advantage of them as possible.
