I'm not 100% on this one, but I think, compared to a short story, a novella is substancially longer as well as having a more coherent structure. A short story isn't required to give you all the nitty-gritty where as a novella is basically a shortened novel. That's my perception of it at least...

I suggest you try to get Work Exp with the council IT dept. I went to the Coffs Harbour City Council (voted best council in Australia by the way :P ) and I had a ball, as well as learning a great deal I didn't know.

The prospect of making a fim attracted me, but after I saw the work load involved (I'm too lazy for someone doing a course of this calibur) I freaked out and converted the the Short Story. :P
