    imo 2006

July 2001, you have to learn that with people such as Templar, the size of who's ego inproportionately outstrips he's mathematical abilities, emotionally punching others of higher abilities down is his only means of achieving personal satisfaction; let's face it, without any significant...

    ANU science vs UNSW science

Precisely. If you can't compare Oxford with ANU, then you can't compare it with any other university in Australia. So this changes nothing about the prestige of the degree in Australia. We all know supply and demand is a part of cut-offs. However, the the supply is restricted in the first...

    Advanced Science/Mathematics student research projects

Yes velox, that what people do when they wish to learn. That's what I and many other students have done for projects with minimal influence by our supervisors. Isn't it such a hassle that in order to credit the work do we ourselves that we need to go through all the administrative bungle of...

    Advanced Science/Mathematics student research projects

Maybe you have too much faith in the perfect moral world that you seem to believe university lecturers live in. It's been my experience that some (emphasis on "some") lecturers use the excuse of prerequisites as a facade, behind which their real reason is that they can't be bothered making...

    ANU science vs UNSW science

It is prestigious by virtue of the content and involvement of the degree, the entry level (ie. cut-off), and the institution offering it. All PhB degrees are prestigious worldwide - eg. check out the PhB degree offered by Oxford University in the UK. PhB degrees are rare in the world and...

Does anyone know if the TSP runs through the summer break? ie. are you guys offered advanced courses or research projects over the summer session as well? (without being a vacation scholar)

Maybe your faculty (or TSP program coordinator) should make it clear to those unwilling staff members that "supervision" involves as much as just telling the student to learn everything him/herself and giving a few assignments out. This really isn't much. Whether or not someone 'fails'...

    ANU science vs UNSW science

Hi Jameswilmot2000, Do you have any specific discipline(s) or major(s) in mind? It is actually very difficult to qualitatively compare the two universities in a field as broad as 'Science' in general. There are specialties within both Universities that their counterparts do not possess...

Do you guys also get to do postgraduate units of study like the UNSW students? in second or third year. And even though it might be interesting to do later year courses earlier, wouldn't it turn out pretty disastrous if you didn't have the foundation to cope with it?

I see, thanks acmilan. It's unfortunate that they don't offer any other mode of participating in these projects other than for people on a financial scholarship.

Thanks Tennille. Although, I was asking specifically about the variety or kind of actual projects that are being offered at USyd... do they offer them over the summer holidays as well? Cheers.

    Advanced Science student projects

Thanks Iruka. The vacation scholarships allow you to be enrolled in one-off research projects with academic staff member(s) done over the summer at any university which offer the scholarship (but not controlled centrally, meaning you have to apply to the specific departments/schools). It...

Thanks for that §eraphim. I am surprised that you guys are allowed to enrol in postgraduate units - at what stage are you allowed to do this btw? Surely not in first year? Yes been there done that. Does not help; which is why I posted. Absolutely not :p.

Mathematics student research projects @ Uni

Does anyone know of any undergraduate research projects that either UNSW and/or USyd offers to its science or advanced science or advanced mathematics students throughout their degree? What sort of topics and themes do these usually involve and what's it like in general? And do you usually...
