Currently I've been looking at two degrees mainly, Bachelor of Commerce/Advanced Computing @ USYD & Commerce/Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) @ UNSW.

My first concern is the quality of the course between in the unis. Although people were telling me that USYD was bad for computing, according to the Times Higher Education rankings USYD is better than UNSW for computing (77 vs 83). But idk how accurate they are, so could anyone help me out with that?

Also, the course at USYD is 5 years while UNSW is 4 years, is there any major implications for an extra free year. Although I've seen people say the 5th year is mostly research, and that you can work during it I'm still a bit concerned.

Finally, my parents had concerns regarding the UNSW computing course being under a bachelor of science as opposed to the USYD course which seemed to be under the Engineering Faculty entirely.

Any help or advice is appreciated, thanks.

Don't trust rankings, they're very unreliable

This shouldn't matter as you don't need accreditation for compsci afaik unlike engineering

An extra year can speed up your career progression and give you more time in the industry -> more opportunities

1st and 2nd year cs courses at unsw are very highly optimised and I heard the difficulty of the degree compared to other universities reflects that

you can do a bsc in compsci at usyd, which is more flexible than adv comp (if youre interested in that) and also is 3 years compared to 4 - if you want to do honours year for research you can always elect to do that, or just go and work in industry. also, no one will care if there's "advanced computing" compared to compsci/bsci, at least for employers for compsci degrees.

don't use rankings for unis, they're usually based primarily on research or other really arbitrary things that don't affect u as an undergrad (unless if u want to do a lot of research). usyd/unsw are both good unis for compsci, they have very similar core units and a good variety of elective study areas as well (with usyd's bsci you can also have a major in a second area of study if you want, you can do a similar thing by taking electives at unsw). usyd is also known for being a bit more theoretical than unsw but meh. main difference is trimesters vs semesters (unsw is a bit more squeezed than usyd, and also less holiday time [only 2-3 weeks or so, compared to ~2 months at usyd] to do things like projects), commute, campus etc. u won't really go wrong with either

I'm sorry, could you please elaborate on this?
That's generally the feedback I've heard for unsw cs
I haven't done many cs courses yet nor do I really know what it means for a course to be optimised so I can't give much info there
but you can search up unsw cs courses online since they're all uploaded for free and see if the pacing is something that you'll enjoy
I've found them to be alright so far
