    Polynomials Q

    Let P(x) = (x-b)(x-c)+(x-c)(x-a)+(x-a)(x-b) then since P(a) = P(b) = P(c) = 0, then a, b, c are roots if P(x) has a dbl root, and since it's a quadratic, then there is only one soln for which P(x) = 0 thus a=b=c

    Science Competition

usually about 2-4 ppl in ruse get the thing each year. usually if you get 44 / 45 (in higher grades) you'll get it. of course, if someone else in the state gets 45 / 45 then you won't. but if you get 45/45 you're pretty sure you'll get it. just not the money :chainsaw:

i hate mechanics my forces point the wrong way all the time

    Titration Q

 I'm sure I've done both ways in my lifetime. Purple to colourless is actually easier to see. There's no difference.

    Science Competition

if u get the top mark in the state for your grade, you get this oval shaped medal. it looks like gold and it seems heavy, but i don't think it's gold...well if there is any, there's not very much of it ummm...i dun think they give out money any more...they used to, about $100, but not...

    Titration Comp

oooh...finals is interesting....but so much space for error... my teacher's tip for that: dun bother filtering... i dun think ppl do neway...

best way to study for a chem prac test?

how can they afford so many burettes? I guess there's not very many chem students then...we can never afford a titration test...cos there's not enough burettes to go around...

    Harder Polynomial

no usually we're not allowed to introduce too much weird new stuff into our HSC 4u, but i learnt this in yr7 maths enrichment...surprising NSW doesn't teach it at all...

best way to study for a chem prac test?

if ur school can afford to have a titration as a prac test, it has TOO MUCH MONEY on its hands...

    Harder Polynomial

    hell yeh it comes out nicely... suppose x=p/q is a solution then by rational root thm, since both leading coefficient and constant term is odd, p and q must both be odd (p | a_0, q | a_n) So P(p/q) = 0 => a_n*p^n/q^n + a_n-1*p^n-1/q^n-1 + ... + a_1*p/q + a_0 = 0 => a_n*p^n +...

    Harder Polynomial

anyone want the solution to this one yet? i thought of one using mod-arithmetic...i dun think they teach that for 4u...

    Titration Comp

i guess as long as you read it the same way all the time, it shouldn't be a problem, cos ur errors will cancel-out

reckon ruse will come top again this year?

haha...it's been a while since i was in that position... but i noticed that, at least in my school, ppl don't try to compare themselves with the top ppl. if they do, i haven't noticed it. idunno why. perhaps it's because it's usually more the top person's fault if the mark difference is...

reckon ruse will come top again this year?

yep u got it...it's no fun bein beaten by some1 u know you'll never beat. and then again, if you look at it from another way, it's also no fun beating ppl who u know u're way ahead of... that's wot 'match-making's for in warcraft 3, etc..

    ChemOlympiad'Training'

oh, if anyone can get their grubby hands on the syllabus of what the USYD ppl or Dr Bishop from SGS are teaching, could u plz post it here?

reckon ruse will come top again this year?

umm i think competition as a driving force for learning is the best argument for NSW's selective school system. You group all the ppl with equal talents together. That way, average ppl dun get freaked out by the geniuses, and the smart ppl don't get complacent. but competition is bad when...

    distinguishing tests

you might want to search this up on google or somethin, but i remember you can either use ceric ammonium nitrate (the orange stuff), or lucas reagent (Zn2+ in HCl) I think lucas reagent gives +ve result to tertiary alcohols and also secondary results after heating. I've forgotten bout...

reckon ruse will come top again this year?

Cyph, i sorta get how you'd think that way with the band-6 girl next to you. but really competing and comparing are also two sides of the same coin. Only that competing is you're sad when you lose, and in comparing you may be happy when you lose (when you lose less than you did before)...

reckon ruse will come top again this year?

but Cyph, aren't you saying: "let's not see the bucket as half empty and be sad about it, let's see it as half full and be grateful of what we have?"
