    i hate probability

    My way of doin Q!: Like McLake said, you draw one red from a possible 4, and 2 blue from a possible 5. Order isn't important (it's a selection). Thus # possible ways is (4C1)*(5C2) = 4*10 = 40 # sample space = 9C3 = 84 40/84 = 10/21

    A re-phrasing of the modules exam:

    I've re-phrased the questions that I did for the exam, just to make things clearer: Mod A, Q1: Transformations is an interesting topic. To what extent do you agree? Refer to your set texts in your answer. Mod B, Q2: Compose an argument of two people about a novel. (Cheers to all the...

    Questions

    1) There are 3 'A's in australia, 7 different characters altogether. So this is like the other problem that fuelled the huge argument in the FREQUENT thread. The solution is to break it up into cases: No 'A's: 6 different letters, all must be included: 6! 1 'A': 7 different letters...

    i hate probability

    McLake: your question 1 is right Q2: P(1) + P(2) + P(3) + P(4) + P(5) + P(6) = 1 k(1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6) = 1 k = 1/21

    SHM question

    I got 17minutes and 16secs after 12:30 it's 12:47:16 pm Here's why: Low tide is -2.4m, high is +0.6m, thus amplitude = 1.5m, centre of oscillation = -0.9m Low tide: 8:30a.m, high: 2.35pm Period T = 2 * (6hours 5 minutes = 6 1/12) = 12 1/6 hours = 73/6 hours We begin with low tide...

    hardest topic

    Knowing the harmonic mean isn't necessary, but in 4umaths, using any method is legal. Personally i've never used the harmonic mean crap, there's usually another way. But anyways: a1 + a2 + ... + an = k (a1 + a2 + ... + an)/n = k/n You look at the expression: 1/(a1) + 1/(a2) + ... +...

    Perms and Combs

    Looks as if your class taught probability in one day, or you missed school for a few weeks (or coincidentally all the maths periods for a few weeks). Best thing to do would probably be to look at all the probability questions in the past exams...no time to learn from scratch now... In the...

    English paper 2 - WTF??

    It's the second year of the HSC, and looking at the mod A and C questions, they must've ran out of questions to ask already...! Imagine what next year's questions would be like. It's an embarassment to all the english-speakers in the world...

    looks easy, but...

    Suppose it took x minutes to fill up the tank with the faster pipe (pipe A), so it took x + 120 minutes to fill with the second pipe (pipe B) So call the rate of water from pipe A = dA/dt, pipe B = dB/dt, volume of tank be V dA/dt = V / x dB/dt = V / (x + 120) Together, the two pipes...

    Binomial and Binomial Probability

    Binomial Formula is just this: (a + b)^n = (nC0)a^n + (nC1)a^(n-1)*b + (nC2)a^(n-2)*b^2 + ... + (nCn)b^n where a, b can be anything. Binomial probability refer to cases where there are several incidents (flips of a coin, # marbles out of a bucket, etc) to be considered, each independant...

    hardest topic

    Try AM >= HM U prob don't need this in 4uHSC anyways...
  12. S

    hardest topic

    You just reverse the process and answers become questions...it's not hard to make these things up... and beside, these AM-whateverM inequalities often begin like: if a1 + a2 + ... + an = something, then blablabla..

    hardest topic

    An example? try this: Given a1 + a2 + ... + an = k, and a1, a2, ..., an > 0 Prove 1/(a1) + 1/(a2) + ... + 1/(an) >= (n^2)/k
  14. S

    not sure if binomial?

    Idunno whether anyone's got an answer here yet, here's mine: P( >=2 rats same exit) = 1 - P(rats go different exits) = 1 - (5*4*3*2) / 5^4 = 1 - 24/125 = 101/125

    Logic? I thought you were born with/without it?

    What average marks do u need to get 100 uai

    They say 480/500 is a certain 100UAI, but how much lower than that will get you in - depends on each year... Getting a 98-99 in somethin (like 4umaths) will make life much easier...

    hardest topic

    A 'power mean' P(k) is this: P(k) = ( (a1^k + a2^k + a3^k + ... + an^k) / n )^(1/k) Ao AM - arithmetic mean is when k = 1, HM - harmonic mean is when k = -1, for those interested, QM - quadratic mean is when k = 2, cubic mean is when k = 3, and geometric mean is when k approaches 0. A...

    Are you using a fancy quote about change at the beginning of your essay?

    Depends whether you could effectively relate change to those quotes. It won't make a difference between band 5 and 6, because a "famous quote" is definitely not a requirement for top band. It'll probably be better if you be original and come up with funky things to say.

    Probability query.

    You can usually do the thing in your head, but for more complicated stuff, you need a box diagram. Depends on how familiar you are with the stuff.
