It's actually quite intense, but I guess it depends how well you perform under those sort of circumstances. They do both, teach and provide you with an adequate amount of notes. It's a top way to make friends as well.

I did the UNSW bridging course for maths - $500 upfront.

You said not a novel, but you could really read this thing in an hour or so considering it's an early teen book - The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier. And yeah, like Minai said, newspaper articles (esp now) are pretty good sources to use.
