    1 very lame question ^^

Rules for Significant Figures: 1. All non-zero digits are significant. 2. The first non-zero digit is the first significant figure. 3. All zeros after the first significant figure are also significant. 4. Trailing zeros may or may not be significant. For example: The population of Australia is...

    Financial maths

I'd suggest to stick with 365 days in a year and 52 weeks in a year. If they want you to use 365.25 or 52.14 or 52.18 they'll say so. The only thing to remember is that if you need to convert months to weeks, DON'T multiply by 4 or 4.5 or anything like that. It's too rough. To convert months to...

    Cne?

There are few codes you might come across. CNE = Correct Numerical Expression This means that you'll get the full mark for an expression which works out to give the correct answer. For example, if the correct answer to a trig question is 19.41 m, and you write 24 sin 54, you may get the mark...

    Differentiation...

    Use the product rule. d/dx[x9(7 – 4x)] = x9.d/dx[7 – 4x] + (7 – 4x).d/dx[x9] = x9.(–4) + (7 – 4x).9x8 = –4x9 + 9x8(7 – 4x) = –4x9 + 63x8 – 36x9 = 63x8 – 40x9

    Is this question supposed to read: 5562 – 1362 – 1362 + 4162 ???

    Should I or shouldn't I??

It's about time the unis woke up and got out of the 1970s. General Maths is actually quite good preparation for any student doing subjects like psychology and offered limited preparation for stats subjects. 2u and 3u maths obviously has no stats but loads of calculus so those subjects are for...

    Quadratic Functions

    I actually prefer a different method. Treat the question in "cases". Case 1: The denominator is positive. So if x – 2 > 0, we have x > 2 And therefore: 1 / (x – 2) < 1 Multiply by the denominator (which is positive): 1 < x – 2 Add 2 to both sides 3 < x x > 3 Since x > 2 and x > 3, we can see...

    British Comedy

    * The Armstrong & Miller Show - surprisingly good stuff, hopefully ABC will show the 2nd series next year * Black Adder - classic stuff * Allo Allo - saw it again on TV recently, still as good as it was 20 years ago * Mr Bean - of course * Big Train - very under-rated sketch show from the late...

    Best game of all time??

Best GAME of ALL TIME? This question could possibly do with some parameters. Surely the game of Chess would be up at the top? Video game? I'd back Tetris or Pac-Man.

    Area question

Remember that the area of an ellipse is πab, where a and b are the "radii". So Area of smaller ellipse = πab = π x 8 x 2.5 = 62.8 cm2

    A study guide without exercises

I remember that Excel has a cute little pocket book which summarises the whole General Course. I've seen a couple of them, but I've not seen them in shops. Something else you might like is a set of study cards which are available from Jacaranda Press. You can buy them in shops, or you can even...

    Today's CSSA Paper

That hockey/tennis question ... 18% play tennis AND hockey 65% play tennis 65 - 18 = 47, so 47% play tennis ONLY Now we have 15% playing no sport 18% playing both sports 47% playing tennis This adds up to 80% 100 - 80 = 20, so 20% play hockey ONLY. 20% play hockey only 18% play hockey AND...

    Another Q

"Show" just means that you should set out your working as you normally would, working towards the answer. Pretend that you don't know the answer. The perimeter of the rectangle must be 16 metres. Let x be the length and y be the width. P = 2(x + y) = 16 2x + 2y = 16 2y = 16 – 2x y = 8 – x So...

general maths? how are u going in it?

Yeah. The unis are still doing things the same way they did it in the 80s when students had an aggregate mark out of 500 (i.e. best 10 units). General Maths is probably MORE useful for many degrees because of the head start it gives students in statistics. Good for psychology and stuff like that.

    Median Line of Regression

If the line looks like / then it will have a positive gradient. If the line looks like \ then it will have a negative gradient. The best way to do this is always work left to right. The run is how far you go across. Because you're going left to right, the run is always positive. Then work out...

    Probability

    n(odd) = 50 n(<30) = 29 n(odd AND <30) = 15 .: P(odd OR <30) = P(odd) + P(<30) – P(odd AND <30) = (50 + 29 – 15)/100 = 64/100 = 16/25

    Median Line of Regression

    What's your question? Remember that you need to keep the co-ordinates in order. For example, if the first median point is (25,45) and the third median point is (52,18) then: Gradient = Rise/Run = (y2 – y1)/(x2 – x1) = (18 – 25)/(52 – 25) = –27/27 = –1
