    AIM or the con?

My piano teacher told me that she once had an AIM student, but was shocked to learn that the reason she had failed her AMEB exam was because she had only learnt one scale. I read a few of the terms and conditions from the AIM website and sure enough, one of them was that it is the student's...

Composition Tutoring for 2007 Music Students

Nicci_15, what's your rate and where are you located? Also, forgive me for asking, but what were your rankings/marks in Music 2 and Extension 2 like?

    HSC performance pieces

Back on topic, are you doing Music 1 or 2, bringbackshred? It's great to see another guitar player here. In fact, there seem to be quite a lot in this thread... I visited the AMC centre somewhat recently to find an Australian classical guitar piece to perform. I'm most likely going to try...

    Demotivated

Think of it this way: "demotivated" isn't a word - and technically it isn't. It's "unmotivated". :p Sight-reading some modern or popular music might be more fun. You could also try listening to good songs you haven't heard in a while to hopefully feel inspired by music again.

    Short-Listed for Encore 2006

Is it in fact true that being nominated for Encore means a receiving full marks for the performance, composition or essay? Conversely, does not being nominated automatically mean that the item did not receive full marks?

    Best Budget $500 Guitars

Ibanez is my own brand of choice, but if you're a beginner and have no idea what you're doing, almost any guitar will do. It's my personal belief that one should begin humble, rather than immediately commencing with a high-quality instrument. I recommend the Ibanez GRX40 and AX30 guitar and amp...

    Best Budget Amp

I would recommend purchasing a guitar and amp starter pack, such as the Ibanez or Ashton beginner packages, if you're just starting out. If you do in fact acquire your guitar and amp separately, have enough money and are planning to play seirously, I would highly recommend upgrading to a 30W amp...

Conservatoriums - GENERAL: Entry, atmosphere, auditions etc.

According to a friend at the Con, there are approximately 4 piano spaces available. Also, Michael Smetanin is apparently quite drunk. o_0

Conservatoriums - GENERAL: Entry, atmosphere, auditions etc.

Oho! What would the "correct" answer have been, then? Wouldn't it seem slightly...pretentious to enter the interview gushing about how good Michael Smetanin is, even if it was true?

    Composition Tutoring

It may be a little late to bring attention to this topic again, but WHAT?

How are pieces chosen for encore?

Exactly how prestigious is Encore? Is the receipt of an invitation to it something that should be flaunted ostentatiously on a resume or application form, or very much a "bah, humbug!" type of thing?

What grade should I be at?

That could be an advantage for less able performers such as myself, but it also seems unfair in many ways. It's like comparing a Grade 1 beginner to an international musician and saying that they both deserve the same amount of praise because they look like they're playing with the same serious...

    Compositions

Although this is quite late, CHEPAS! Your works are simply awesome! If I may ask, what were the marks you received for them? I especially enjoyed the one with the trumpet, flute and drum kit.

    Performance Opportunities

Does anyone know any band camps or music workshops that would also cater for classical or electric guitarists, and possible even both? I just found out about http://www.pau.nsw.edu.au/TAU/Music/Instrumental%20Ensembles/Instrumental%20Ensembles%20Home.htm but it seems to have expired several days...

    HSC performance pieces

Music doesn't have to be complicated to be good. While there's nothing wrong with a complex design, I personally don't approve of attempting to compose something experimental if it's going to be done badly. Much popular music contains only power chords because that is all that is needed. People...

    Recordings for Composition

There's no need for even that. If you just want to convert MIDI to MP3, download a free reocrding program, such as Audacity, and record using "Stereo Mix". This will essentially record all noise that is being played by your computer.

    HSC Performance - Singers

I'm going to sway this conversation a little; does anyone know anything about sight-singing? I'm not a singer, and I really mean that. I never, ever sing in front of other people (especially not solo!), and although the rhythm should be fine, the pitch part will most likely be a problem. I can...

Music 1/2 Help for Next Year

Definitely go for Music 2. In my school at least, dropping down to Music 1 is permitted, but moving up to Music 2 is not, much in the same way you can always drop a unit of Maths, but may not always be able to pick one up. If you think it's hard to receive a good mark in Music 2, then you'll...

Conservatoriums - GENERAL: Entry, atmosphere, auditions etc.

Thanks immensely, ur_inner_child! If you could ask about the number of places, that would be great! What can I say? Damn right it is. EDIT: It seems that acceptance into the Music Studies course is in no way easier than that of the Composition one, as the class is the same, anyway.

    What's your favourite radio station?

I don't listen to the radio very much any more, but I used to (although now I can't tihnk why) be an avid fan of the modern rock music of Triple M (104.9FM). These days, when I do listen to the radio, it's almost exclusively classical music, since I prefer to listen to only my own choices of...
