Also, you don't have to develop the whole mystery/crime. Set up the detective and context and then maybe introduce the crime as a cliffhanger? Or simply do the conclusion of a crime, with complications of course.

From the papers I've done they're more likely to ask you to identify it (in pseudocode) rather than write it yourself

According to my teacher, and seemingly from recent exam questions, they are moving away from questions regarding filmic and theoretical interpretations as this is a 'close study of the text'.

You have to show all working in blue/black pen. Diagrams and graphs can be drawn in pencil though. The thing about pencil is that it can be easily edited without leaving much of a trace. Even though you don't get your papers back, it's a risk BOS wouldn't want to take. Pencils fade, etc

The HTA History book is much more detailed while still being only an overview. See if you can find one
