A gateway is anything that allows access to another network, eg. you can set up a PC to be a gateway and share a modem connection with other PCs on the same LAN. A router is an actual device, that also happens to be a gateway. (To *nix zealots - shh.) Apologies if I'm being vague, I...

In the real world: Hubs - not really used anymore. Switch - You have groups of computers connected to these. These are connected back to one or more... Routers - These act as gateways to the Internet (or the _Intra_net on a company LAN).

Ok, I'll start from the ground and work upwards: Hub - allows multiple computers to talk to eachother on a Local Area Network. 'Dumb' - anything it receives it retransmits to all the other computers attached to it. Switch - a 'smart' hub: it only retransmits messages to the destination...

Not four. Just have one in your mind, if you can think of one. There's one in chapter 4, but it's rubbish. Use it if you have to. I don't have the book here, being ex-HSC, but you can ask specific questions. Sorry. :( (Edit - typo.)

    Ad-Hoc Wireless Networking

After you get the wireless network up, you need to install ICS on the win98 machine, and set the Mac to get its IP via DHCP. I've had difficulties getting *nix playing with ICS before. *Sigh*

    speaking software

For anyone with *nix and is interested in the programming side of things: http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/sphinx/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/cmusphinx/ Have fun. (By the way, to any UTS-ers, this is the speech system that was shown off in DCA today.)

    Autocomplete In Windows

Look, in Win98 in the run dialog you have a history of what you're previously typed there before. In Win2k/XP, as you type filenames, it autocompletes them. It doesn't do this in Win98 - it just uses ze history. Ne?

    TMAT! The Martial Arts Thread

Umm... Karate (Go-kan-ryu) (yellow/orange-tip). And a small amount of Kendou. And an even smaller amount of Aikidou. I _really_ want to have another go at Aikidou. I'm not very flexible, mind, so it might a tad difficult. The lower grades of GKR seem to be focused on meeting force with...

say.....we can burn the AOS notes now...

Pass the most useful parts of the notes onto someone else. Burn the rest if you have to. Case in point: my previous teacher (Gosbell) gave us some wonderful notes for Donne. The new(er) teacher didn't really have anything as detailed as the previous lot. She got my copies.
