I think if you're committed enough you can acheive anything. See Lexicographer as an example. He didn't do too well in the HSC and UMAT but he worked hard at Uni and resat the UMAT and got good results and now he's studying in UWA. So, the question you should be asking yourself isn't really...

what do you mean class size? in lectures we have the whole year sitting in so i guess around 200 students (maybe 180 accounting for those who are skipping lectures or sick). For tutorials it's about 15 and they're conducted in tutorial rooms.

in my year there are about 80 international students and 120 local students. It is not difficult to gain entry. The academic credentials of students at Monash (both local and international), in my experience of asking around do not have to be cream of the crop (say, compared to UNSW or UMelb)...
