There are some stereos that feature a USB host, so that you can plug in a flash drive or USB HD and play the music stored on them. You have to be wary, though; some stereos have a usb port, but simply act as a external sound card for a pc... not so useful IMHO. Others can stream music off a LAN...

I have found that generally the more you pay for a mp3 cd player, the longer the battery life is. Just buy a good brand like Panasonic, Sony, Phillips etc. and you should be fine.

If you own the music you could re-rip it at a lower bitrate. You could reconvert your music using something like dbpoweramp but you will lose ALOT of quality due to the lossy compression ----> lossy compression conversion. Please, think of the music.
