    Urgent: Equilibrium bits and pieces

An urgent question, but when you're talking about the effects of temperature on an equilibrium, any, say, H3PO4(aq) <---> H2PO4-(aq) + H+(aq) (exothermic), is it wiser to talk about it in terms of the increasing and decreasing of K values, or the shifting of the equilibrium position? Eg. If you...

    A multiple choice question...

Adding water decreases [OH-] I suppose, but how does that affect [H+]?... For OCl-(aq) + H20(l) <---> HOCl(aq) + OH-(aq) and picking C, maybe I was thinking of acids and ionisation, that when you add water, it ionises more? Or maybe I'm completely wrong. I don't know...

    Sulfuric Acid

Heh, poor Johnny ^^ Nice rhyme! 3c) I would've thought it would've just shifted equilibrium to the right 'cause of the exothermic reaction and everything. Maybe what you said was the same thing... Another sulfuric acid question: Why does a solution of sulfuric acid labelled 0.050M H2SO4...

    half-equations and reactions

Well, I guess, if you're planning to put the half equations together to get the overall reaction, the equations should have the same number of electrons

    A multiple choice question...

NaOCl is completely dissociated in water to form Na+(aq) and OCl-(aq). In solution OCl- hydrolyses according to the equation OCl-(aq) + H20(l) <---> HOCl(aq) + OH-(aq) 100ml of pure water at constant temperature is added to a 100ml solution of 0.10M NaOCl. When the solution reaches...

    Sulfuric Acid

Some questions: 1. If you were designing a sulfuric acid plant, briefly list important factors that you would consider when deciding: a. Whether to use powdered sulfur from a local supplier or molten sulfur transported a greater distance Cost of transport? b. If sulfur were to be burnt in...

    Self ionisation of water

I'm following... I think, except up to this bit: I'm not sure why, when you multiply the units, they cancel out. I'd understand if you had division, eg. g/mole divided by mole, maybe the moles would cancel... (if that's at all correct)... but when its being multiplied... huh?

    Acids, bases, pH

    Hehh, I know, some of those were dumb questions >.< 2. I got these two (not sure it's right): H2CO3(aq) + OH-(aq) <---> HCO3-(aq) + H2O(l) HCO3-(aq) + H+(aq) <---> H2CO3(AQ) + h2O(l) I'm not entirely sure how you got the equations *puzzled* 3. Yeah, it sounds more like a biology...

    Reaction rates

URGENT... with acid reactions such as, say... acid + metal ---> salt + H2 or acid + metal carbonate ---> salt + CO2 + H20 How would you measure the rate of these types of reactions? I can think of some, like measuring the volume of gas evolved over time, or measuring loss of mass over...

    Self ionisation of water

Thanks for clarifying that bit, ea22.07... so my understanding is right, yes? Xiao, you have successfully confused me with the units thingy now O.o ... I dun know how you get from one step to the next... (but maybe because I've neva worked with mol/dm before...) I think he interpreted...

    Self ionisation of water

Just needed a little explanation of concepts. Is the ionisation constant/product of water (Kw) like K in that it tells you the extent the reaction progresses? So... this reaction: H20(l) + H2O(l) <---> H3O+(aq) + OH-(aq) ionises very little? (Kw= 1.0*10^-14 at 25C) When you get water like...

I am having trouble with several questions: 1. Solutions of the acid-base indicator methyl red contains an equilibrium mixture of the red-coloured acid form of the indicator and a yellow-coloured conjugate form of the indicator and a yellow-coloured conjugate base form. The equilibrium can be...

    Graph problem

In a question, I came across this graph: y= sq. root of-3(4-x) I graphed it on my calculator, and it didn't come up as I expected. It appears to have been dilated by sq. root of 3 parallel to the y-axis, then translated 4 units to the right. What happened to the two reflections? Reflection in...

    Equilibrium...

pH buffers Came across... 'Control of pH in the blood is achieved using different buffers. One of the important buffers is made up of carbonic acid (H2CO3) and the hydrogen carbonate ion (HCO3-): H2CO3(aq) + H20(l) <---> HCO#-(aq) + H3O+(aq) The action of this buffer system becomes clear is we...

What do you think about the answer to this question

That's true. Though to 'check' a reaction's indeed at equilibrium, you can do things like add radioactive reactants, and after awhile discover that they become part of the products. That's when you know the whole thing hasn't simply stopped, but is actually in equilibrium.

    Equilibrium...

Thanx :) I wasn't thinking too much first time round and for some reason decided, 'cause it gives you the no. moles and the volume, I found the 'the HI concentration' (which wasn't really the answer) without using K. I can see it gets you totally the wrong answer... but... why? ^^ Well...
