    UNSW chit chat thread

Re: UNSW chit chat thread 2017 I remember it being early July last year so that's still about less than 2 weeks away. Also, not all subjects will be added early so can't pinpoint the timing exactly (just depends on when you did exams for the subjects and the subject itself).

    UNSW chit chat thread

Re: UNSW chit chat thread 2017 I imagine about a week before at the earliest if you had early exams.

Ranks these uni's for Commerce and Economics.

To an extent, university 'reputation' does exist. However, what is way more important than university 'reputation' is the generally greater opportunities at the more 'reputable' universities. If we look at management consulting: - Statistically, MBB have somewhat of a preference for USYD/UNSW...

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

The Big 4 accounting firms ask mainly motivational and behavioural questions (and sometimes a commercial awareness question but that's more about understanding what's happening in the world and how that can affect the industry rather than technical concepts). The investment banks do ask...

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

Don't need a Commerce degree for many of these positions. There's definitely Arts, Engineering, Psychology, etc. students in the various service lines of the accounting firms and banks. I've even heard a story of an Optometry student who got into Assurance at one of the Big 4.

    Commerce/Economics VS Commerce

ECs just make you seem more of an 'interesting' person. Solid academic marks and work experience will illustrate that you have the work ethic and that you're capable. Extracurricular activities (whether it be competitions, society positions or even your hobbies) show that you're more than just...

Why do people choose to do Law?

Not a lawyer myself (currently a law student) but I think: For a good law student, you may only need the "legal" skills (legal problem solving ability). In law school examinations and assignments, they give you a problem and you're going to have to solve it using the principles you've learnt...

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

Congrats for getting to PwC's AC! Personally didn't make it myself and know a lot (including Comm/LLB people) who didn't so really solid stuff. I think just the typical advice applies: - Group activities - (1) don't try to dominate and talk over others but make sure you don't stay quiet either...

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

Thanks! Yeah, definitely grateful for the offer and felt lucky to get it. Like I didn't make it/haven't made it to AC or final interview for any other firm (received confirmed rejections from some of the Big 4 and some mid-tier firms too). Know Comm/LLB or Comm/ACTL people with D average WAM...

    Summer Vacation Internship's 2017/2018

Got an offer for Tax with one of the Big 4. Happy to answer any questions. Just depends on what you want to apply for. The Big 4 professional services firms and mid-tier accounting firms tend to be less tough on the initial stage(s) so it's fine to take the scattergun approach. The Big 4...

Why do people choose to do Law?

You might have to do 1-2 essays maximum per Law subject. Your mid-semester assignment might be an essay (research essay) and then your final exam could have an essay section. I'm in 4th year Law now and I feel I've done more "problem question" (so applying the law to a hypothetical situation)...

Why do people choose to do Law?

Doing Commerce (Accounting)/Law and I initially picked Law because I felt it would complement my Commerce degree (I loved Business Studies and Economics in HS and never picked Legal Studies). Saw Law as an interesting complementary degree and I knew I wanted to do a combined Commerce degree...

Fourth year law student - ask me anything!

Which is still 4 years (Comm/LLB being 5 years, an extra year). Not sure why so many people who end up in consulting/IB would do Commerce/Engineering (5.5 years) and Commerce/Law (5 years) when a Commerce/Arts degree opens up way more opportunities and is only 4 years. I guess it's all lies...

Why do people choose to do Law?

Don't really enjoy 'learning' law as much as I should myself either (but it's still better than accounting). I also definitely started to feel burnt out towards the end of last year. Just hoping legal practice will somewhat be better if I go down that route. I've really liked my work...

Marks for legal employment - sacrificing results for work?

By no means am I an expert with getting into mid-tier/top-tier law firms but Law firms 'basically' only care about your Law marks when it comes to assessing your academics (when they ask you to input marks, it's usually just your Law marks). This means a Distinction average Law WAM (i.e. 75+)...
