    The basics (surface tension)

When you pour water into a glass, it concaves upwards due to Adhesive forces > cohesive forces near the edges of surface But how can this be? Adhesive forces in this case are dispersive whilst cohesives forces are hydrogen bonding? So dispersion > hydrogen bonding? !?!?!??!? Edit: I think the...

Best advice for Year 11 (poor) into HSC?

Find passion and appreciation within the subjects you are learning! And from there, improve your ways of learning/thinking; Realise the bigger picture, see the logic. It takes time to train your mind, but you will slowly see your workload cut as you understand new concepts much easier and...

    Finding equation of parabola

Q: Find the equation of the parabola whose focus is (-3,-1) and directrix 3x - 2y = 5 As far as I can tell this is a slanted parabola, since directrix is slanted? If I let (x,y) be a point on the parabola then (x+3)^2 + (y+1)^2 = (3x - 2y -5)^2/ 13 (distance of (x,y) from focus and...

    Laptop or Book?

It depends on how you best learn, really. You're still only in year 10 so make sure to experiment in year 11 :)

    Chemistry Question

    "Way1: THere are 10x20ml in 200ml so moles of Pb(NO3)2 is 0.3598445." In your case, you have 0.36 mol/200mL but you want mol/L, so times further by 5 i.e. (0.36 x 5)/(200mL x 5) = 1.80 mol/L Though, there was an unecessary jump from 20mL to 200mL to 1000mL (x10 x5).

    Post your subject regrets

Wow. From reading above, a lot of people dislike chemistry eh. It is one of my favourite subjects (top 2). I don't have any regrets in my subject choices. I enjoy them all :)

    Chemistry Question

To argue your Way2 (which is incorrect): Suppose that there is 0.06mol of Pb(NO3)2 in 20mL of water - forming a saturated solution. If I added 180 mL of water, wouldn't there be more room to "saturate"? There is a clear distinction between saturation at 20mL and 200mL. Yes the molarity...

    Help me!

In the formula 4/3 (pi) r^3: Focus on r^3 (since this is what is changing) If we double the radius, it is now (2r)^3 = 8r^3 Therefore we can see it increases by a factor of 8. 29x 8 = 232

Year 11 2013 Chit Chat Thread

To establish a relative ranking in the state, I was thinking we could post up past papers after the yearlies and have each other do them. E.g. Say (for example) I'm a rank 10 in ~100 school with 90% on MX1 test (link) - someone else could do it and compare their marks to me. Of course this idea...

What is the best way to study for yearlies? eg yr 11 yearly exams

Even then, I would prefer to go over foundations and be sure to cover syllabus dot points extensively (to study for yearlies) rather than do past papers. Was just curious as to how everyone was doing 'past papers' when I've found none other than from tutor :P

    Chem, Physics, Bio

I did three sciences at the start of the year. I don't understand the major fuss about it - if you enjoy the subjects, then go for it! Why would 3 sciences equate to significantly harder work than 3 other subjects? If anything, your choice to do 3 sciences would infer that you are a science-y...

    Complex Numbers Thereoms

I've been able to prove that |z1z2| = |z1||z2| and coinciding that arg z1z2 = arg z1 + arg z2 However what about |z1/z2| and arg z1/z2? (arg z1/z2 = arg z1 - arg z2) I'd assume the proofs are very similar since the division function is essentially the multiplication function in inverse however...

    What is crystallisation of water?

Can someone please help me understand this concept a bit more clearly? As far as I know, it relates to water being chemically attached to other compounds (ionic, covalent?) whilst in its crystal structure (which is just ice?). Is this correct? How can H2O even be CHEMICALLY attached to another...
